About the Role
Meeting with students registered with Access and Inclusion Services based on a documented disability or another protected ground, the Access Advisor ensures that students are properly assessed and provided with the appropriate accommodations and services required to reduce or eliminate barriers in the post-secondary learning environment. Working with MRU students, faculty, administrators, and staff, as well as with community agencies, to effectively and appropriately educate members of the MRU community about Alberta Human Rights legislation for post-secondary service to students with a disability or another protected ground, the aim is to provide equitable and reasonable access for students.
Access Advisors must have exceptional knowledge of a variety of diagnoses including physical, psychological, learning, and sensory disabilities. They require the intellectual ability to discern the connections between the disability, the barriers experienced by the student, and appropriate and reasonable academic accommodations to mitigate the barriers. The Access Advisor also presents results of research and program evaluations to colleagues at workshops and conferences, and advises management on the needs of students and recommends improvements for the delivery of services.
This position is a full-time, limited-term role working 35 hours per week and ending June 24, 2026.
Responsibilities
Discuss and identify appropriate documentation required for accommodations Identify appropriate accommodations to reduce or eliminate barriers based on provided documentation Review documentation and identify accommodations based on an Alberta Human Rights protected ground Provide support to faculty/instructional staff in accommodating and working with students requiring accommodations Work with students, faculty/instructional staff, and administrators to address concerns regarding accommodations Maintain student confidentiality Engage in ongoing research and analysis on the duty to accommodate within the post-secondary education environment Maintain current knowledge and understanding of the Alberta Human Rights legislation and case law, accommodation methods, assistive technologies, funding and grant availability (federal, provincial, MRU), and teaching and learning strategies Conduct applicable research to support the improvement of accommodation supports/services Provide support during final exams (Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer) where needed Be available outside of regular work hours to support the facilitation of final exams
Qualifications
Master’s degree or equivalent post graduate studies in a related field 3-5 years experience in an academic setting preferably post-secondary or high school identifying and recommending accommodations, reviewing medical and psychoeducational documentation, supporting individuals with disability-related barriers or other protected grounds Experience working with a multidisciplinary team
