Curriculum Developer – Indigenization

Mandate Reporting to the Manager, Curriculum Development and Renewal, the Curriculum Development Specialist (Indigenization & Decolonization) provides expertise, services and leadership in supporting faculties and academic departments on the design and redesign of program-level curriculum objectives and individual courses, including the development of program and course learning outcomes. This position supports the goals of the division and the campus, as outlined in UVic’s Indigenous Plan centering on Learning & Teaching as a priority area, which prioritizes programming that integrates Indigenous ways of knowing. We undertake to enact the principles outlined by Universities Canada Principles on Indigenous Education as well as the 94 Calls to Action developed by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada by developing culturally appropriate curricula as mandated in both documents. This role recognizes that work in Indigenization and decolonization involves sustained relational engagement and emotional labour, and is supported through collaborative, respectful, and team-based approaches within LTI. Objectives The Curriculum Development Specialist works closely with Elders, knowledge keepers, faculties, departments, instructors, Learning Designers and other stakeholders to ensure that content provided by the faculty/instructor (subject matter expert) is re-imagined, researched and developed to be decolonized and indigenized. This position is central to supporting faculty and instructors in the development of Indigenous curricula for online and in-person teaching and courses as well as at program level curriculum development. In this role, Indigenization refers to the meaningful integration of Indigenous ways of knowing, learning, and being within teaching and curriculum, while decolonization is understood as a reflective, relational, and ongoing process rather than a completed outcome. The position engages in all aspects of the work conducted by LTI, including supporting faculty development, fostering a community around teaching, and cultivating a culture of learning and teaching that advances instructional practice and student academic success. This position requires a level of education, training, and experience equivalent to a Master’s degree plus 2-5 years of relevant experience. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered. Knowledge of Indigenization of curricula and academic programming is required. Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities Include Knowledge of Indigenous worldviews, learning, pedagogies, scholarship and cultural contexts, as well as an understanding of the legacy and ongoing impacts of colonialism, residential schools and 60’s Scoop An understanding and commitment to the TRC Calls to Action, including the ability to apply the Calls To Action within the university programs and curricula development context Commitment to the importance of being in relationship with others including the environment and community Commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive and respectful working and learning environment Ability to apply project management best practices to achieve the full scope of project goals on time and within budget Knowledge of learning technology such as Brightspace, WordPress, Zoom, Teams, iClickers, Echo 360, and Crowdmark and how each platform can be optimally used in different scenarios Knowledge of teaching and learning theories and philosophies including learning-centered teaching and universal design for learning Excellent analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills Excellent facilitation and interpersonal communication skills (written, spoken and presentation) Ability to build and maintain productive working relationships with all stakeholders Ability to work independent and collaborative in a team environment Detail oriented, highly organized, and self‑directed #J-18808-Ljbffr
