Optional Rehabilitation Services Inc. (OPTIONS) is a not-for profit agency approved to support adults and seniors who have a wide range of disabilities. For over 39 years and in a partnership of support, OPTIONS, individuals and their families work together to create individualized support models that enhance and fulfill hopes and dreams.

OPTIONS is looking for aSupportive Roommate who lives in Calgary to support our client. The ideal Supportive Roommate would be a male who has experience supporting adults with complex disabilities. We would also consider a husband-and-wife team with relative experience.

OUR CLIENT

Our client is a very independent, male adult in his 30's. He is a thoughtful and sensitive individual who finds enjoyment and relaxation in playing video games, particularly in the late evening. He is family oriented and loves to spend time with his sister and his son who live separately from him.

Our client lives with mental health and developmental disabilities and is prone to seizures. He requires a Supportive Roommate who can ensure his safety and follow established guidelines to support his daily care.

HOME REQUIREMENTS

Our client thrives in a home where he is the sole individual receiving support. He requires a comfortable bedroom and a welcoming sitting area where he can unwind and enjoy his activities. Our client loves dogs and would feel comfortable in a home where there's a family pet.

The home must have operating fire detectors and extinguishers and will be subject to safety and furnace inspections by OPTIONS throughout the year. Commercial liability insurance for the home a requirement.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Supportive Roommate will be responsible for the following:

· Ability to provide supportive and positive companionship to an adult with mental health and development disabilities.

· Support our client with daily medications and treatment plan.

· Support our client with household duties such as laundry, meal preparation and cleaning.

· Active participation in the individual's care plan and support team.

· Complete Supportive Roommate documentation as provided and required by OPTIONS.

SKILLS, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

· Minimum of 3 years' experience working with an adult with mental health and developmental disabilities.

· Post-secondary education in disability services, mental health, addictions or relevant field such as Social Work, Nursing, etc. A combination of experience and education will be considered.

· Understanding of Indigenous culture, including relevant knowledge or experience, is considered valuable for this role

· Excellent written and oral English communication skills for clear understanding of instructions and daily care needs.

· Must be able to develop rapport and build a trusting relationship for long term support.

· Must be patient, reliable and able to create a comfortable and respectful environment.

REQUIREMENTS

• On-going mandatory training (Medication Administration, Abuse Protocol, Positive Behavioral Supports, Emergency First Aid, etc.).
• Current Security Clearance with Vulnerable Sector Check.
• Minimum Class 5 License with $2M Liability Vehicle Insurance
