Position Overview
We're seeking an experienced Lead Formulator to drive innovation across our natural personal care and color cosmetics lines. In this leadership role, you'll develop groundbreaking formulations that meet both customer expectations and stringent regulatory requirements, while mentoring our formulation team. You'll play a pivotal role in ensuring our products exceed FDA and EU cosmetic regulations and maintain ISO 22716 compliance throughout development stability testing and manufacturing.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead development of innovative natural personal care formulations (skincare, body care, haircare) using clean, sustainable ingredients
- Design and optimize color cosmetic formulations (foundation, lipstick, eyeshadow, blush) with superior performance and natural ingredients
- Ensure all formulations comply with US , Canadian and EU Cosmetic Regulation and relevant ISO standards
- Oversee and implement ISO 22716 protocols throughout formulation development and scale-up processes
- Manage stability testing protocols in accordance with North American and EU requirements
- Lead safety assessment documentation for cosmetic products (CPSR)
- Mentor and develop a team of formulation scientists and technicians
- Collaborate with regulatory affairs to ensure full compliance with international cosmetic standards
- Evaluate and select natural raw materials based on performance, safety, Vegan and sustainability criteria
Document R&D activities to support SR&ED (Scientific Research and Experimental Development) claims with external consultants
Troubleshoot production issues related to initial batches, performance and stability
- Stay current with emerging natural ingredients, US and EU regulatory changes, and clean beauty trends
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in chemistry, Cosmetic Science, or related field (master's preferred)
- Minimum 5+ years of hands-on formulation experience in cosmetics industry
- Proven expertise developing natural/personal care formulations with clean ingredients
- Demonstrated experience creating stable, high-performance color cosmetic products
- In-depth knowledge of EU Canadian and US Cosmetic Regulation
- Practical experience implementing and working within ISO GMP for cosmetics)
- Experience with stability testing protocols and safety assessment documentation
- Strong understanding of natural preservative systems and clean formulation challenges
- Experience managing formulation teams or direct reports
- Excellent problem-solving skills with ability to troubleshoot complex formulation issues
Preferred Qualifications
- Certification in Cosmetic Science (e.g., SCC, BCPC)
- Experience with natural color cosmetics certifications (Natrue, COSMOS)
- Knowledge of both EU , Canadian and US cosmetic regulations
- Experience with sustainable packaging solutions for natural cosmetics
- Familiarity with natural ingredient sourcing and supply chain challenges
