Project Coordinator, Terminal Construction

Victoria, British Columbia, Canada BC Ferries Full time $83,500 - $104,300
Job Description

PROJECT COORDINATOR, TERMINAL CONSTRUCTION

3 Positions

Victoria or Tsawwassen

BC Ferries operates a vital public service by connecting people, communities, and economies along British Columbia's west coast. Every sailing supports daily life across the province from commuting to work or school and accessing healthcare to moving goods and staying connected to family and community. We take pride in delivering safe, reliable, and efficient ferry service while acting as responsible stewards of the coastal environment we operate in.

As one of BC's largest marine asset owners, BC Ferries is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and renewal of a complex network of marine and shore-based infrastructure across 47 terminals and multiple works yards up and down the BC coast. This includes delivering a significant capital program focused on renewing and modernizing terminal infrastructure to support safe, reliable, and cost-effective service for generations to come.

The Opportunity

Following a series of internal promotions, the Terminal Construction department has openings for three full-time project coordinators to join our team to support the planning and deliver of capital infrastructure projects across our terminal network. This is an opportunity to work on projects that are highly visible and impactful, operationally critical, and directly connected to maintaining service to the communities we serve.

Project scopes span a wide range of disciplines and complexities, from full berth or component replacements and marine structure life extensions to terminal developments, building upgrades, tenant improvements, and mechanical and electrical systems. Whether marine, civil, or building-focused, these projects directly support the reliability of an essential public transportation system.

Where Your Work Makes a Real Difference

As a project coordinator in Terminal Construction, you'll work on the Owner's team, contributing to challenging projects in live, operational environments. You'll work with project managers to collaborate with internal partners, consultants, contractors, regulators at all levels, First Nations, and community interest holders, balancing technical delivery with public accountability and real-world operational needs.  You'll be trusted to help plan and deliver complex work, solve problems creatively, and make decisions that have a tangible impact on safety, service continuity, and community connection across coastal BC.

If you're motivated by public service, enjoy working on complex infrastructure, and want your work to have lasting impact beyond the project close-out, this is a role where your work truly matters. "Never the same day twice" is an accurate reflection of what you can expect when you join the BC Ferries Terminal Construction team.

The Role

Reporting to the Program Manager, Terminal Construction, the project coordinator provides professional and technical support to project managers and senior project managers delivering civil, marine, and building infrastructure projects at various locations across coastal British Columbia.  This role offers hands-on exposure to the full project lifecycle and is well suited to someone looking to grow their career in infrastructure project delivery.  Some key responsibilities include:

  • assisting with project planning, scheduling, budgeting, and monthly progress reporting;
  • organizing infrastructure inspections and site investigations and supporting or supervising site activities;
  • supporting design development and the procurement of services and goods including preparing RFP's, tenders and contracts;
  • working collaboratively with a variety of contractors, consultants, permitting and regulatory agencies, First Nations communities and the public;
  • providing on-site supervision and construction management for select projects;
  • maintaining document control;
  • supporting or leading other terminal construction related tasks;
  • supporting departmental leadership across a wide variety of administrative or technical activities and assignments; and
  • may independently manage the planning and execution of smaller and less complex projects with guidance from a project manager.

The Ideal Candidate

You are a curious and adaptable generalist with a technical or project background and a strong interest in developing a career in infrastructure delivery. You are motivated to learn, comfortable asking questions, and eager to take on new challenges across a variety of technical areas.

You are an energetic team player and detail-oriented professional with a positive attitude and strong communication and interpersonal skills, allowing you to build effective working relationships with project teams, departmental staff, consultants, contractors, and stakeholders. You are a self-starter with strong organizational and time-management skills and exercise sound judgement in your work.

You demonstrate the willingness, flexibility, and aptitude to pursue ongoing learning and professional development, including taking on increasing responsibility, new technical areas, and additional training as required.

Working Environment & Conditions

The candidate must have the ability and willingness to travel to terminal project sites, work outdoors in adverse weather conditions, work at heights or work near/over water, occasionally work long hours, evenings, or weekends to support project activities, and undertake assignment at remote terminal locations.

What You Bring to the Team

You bring curiosity, a solid technical foundation, and a genuine interest in building infrastructure that serves the public. You're eager to learn, comfortable working in complex environments, and motivated by projects that have real, visible impact across coastal British Columbia.

Education and Experience:

  • a diploma or degree in engineering, architecture, construction management, building technology, or related field
  • 2 to 5 years of progressive experience in engineering, construction, or capital project coordination, with exposure to planning, design, or construction activities
  • Membership, or eligibility to be registered, as an EIT or Professional Engineer with EGBC or a Technologist with ASTTBC, or equivalent
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered
  • Experience with an Owner's organization, or in a public-facing environment is considered an asset
  • A Project Management Professional (PMP) designation is considered an asset, or willingness to obtain designation in the future upon adequate experience

Knowledge, Skills, and Competencies:

  • a working knowledge of project management and engineering principles, with ability to apply them in real world operational environments
  • progressive experience across the project lifecycle, including planning, design coordination, procurement, and construction
  • familiarity with construction contract law, public procurement principles, CCDC contract forms, and the ability to read and interpret technical design documentation, drawings, and specification
  • a foundational understanding of current standards, codes, bylaws and regulations; zoning and permit requirements, and other regulatory requirements
  • proficiency using standard business applications (MS Word, Excel, Outlook) and working knowledge of MS Project for development and managing schedules;
  • strong interpersonal and communication skills, enabling you to build effective relationships
  • the ability to work independently or collaboratively as part of a team, adapt to changing priorities, and contribute positively to a team environment
  • a problem-solving mindset, with the ability to think critically, manage details, and help projects drive towards practical, results-focussed solutions
  • a valid BC driver's license and willingness to travel throughout coastal BC, including multi-day site visits
  • fluency in spoken and written English
