Your Impact
Reporting to the Senior Manager, Engineering, you will serve as the go-to expert for mechanical engineering support across VIA Rail's legacy fleet. You'll guide Technical Services (TS) teams to harmonize best practices, ensure regulatory compliance, and support project execution with precision and professionalism. This is a leadership role through influence—ideal for someone who thrives on collaboration, strategic thinking, and driving operational excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Provides expertise to support EM across all maintenance centers in the execution of maintenance and/or product improvement implementations for all rolling stock mechanical components for the entirety of the Via Rail legacy fleet;
  • Participates and supports meetings, calls, and initiatives pertaining to maintenance and development of mechanical engineering projects to ensure quality and consistency of rolling stock equipment;
  • Provides technical, operational guidance and oversight to Specialists, Technical Advisors and maintenance center management;
  • Responsible for aligning the initiatives and projects with respects to VIA Rail's needs and objectives;
  • Monitors the impact of changes to the Maintenance Program and startup of the overhaul program and recommends changes;
  • Implements initiatives to ensure a high level of quality among specialists;
  • Acts as a technical representative for the TS groups, as required, to VIA Rail stakeholders within the context of initiatives, plans, crisis management and strategic planning;
  • Supports the Design Engineering initiatives by providing guidance and expertise in the development of the scope of work and associated design reviews. Support H&S issues that involve E.M;
  • Follow-up with committee(s) on progress of issues;
  • Execute Mechanical work packages as required on different projects;
  • Assist Senior Manager, Engineering in identifying and implement initiatives to increase department efficiency, reliability and the availability of the rolling stock.

What We Are Looking For

  • University diploma in Mechanical engineering discipline or equivalent;
  • 10+ years experience within the Rail industry with regards to rolling stock mechanical components and corresponding regulation;
  • Member of the OIQ;
  • Understanding of and capability of balancing short terms needs with long term planning;
  • Strong aptitude in troubleshooting equipment failures and performing root cause analysis;
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Solid decision-making skills and the ability to coach and lead through influence;
  • Must be self-motivated and able to perform under minimal supervision;
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills;
  • Experience leading team in a matricial organisation;
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Word and Excel;
  • Excellent written and verbal proficiency in both official languages (English/French)
