Job Description

The position can be based out of any of our Canadian office locations and is available in a hybrid work format, offering flexibility to accommodate personal circumstances and geographic location.

AECOM is seeking a highly qualified and motivated Senior Heavy Mechanical Engineer to contribute to the design, integration, and implementation of major mechanical equipment for hydroelectric power plants and water retention structures, both for new developments and for rehabilitation and modernization projects. The systems involved include, but are not limited to, gates and stoplogs, trash racks, lifting mechanisms, winches, overhead cranes, material handling systems, as well as associated auxiliary equipment.

You will be part of a multidisciplinary team composed of engineers, technicians, and project managers, contributing to the delivery of complex projects across Canada and, occasionally, internationally. You will also work closely with other engineering disciplines (civil, electrical, structural), architects, suppliers, and specialized consultants.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Act as a senior technical reference in heavy mechanical engineering for hydroelectric and dam projects.
  • Define design criteria and design bases for mechanical systems and ensure compliance with applicable standards and codes.
  • Perform or supervise calculations, analyses, and equipment selection.
  • Prepare, review, and approve technical deliverables (studies, drawings, tender documents, specifications, cost estimates).
  • Coordinate mechanical activities with other disciplines (civil, structural, electrical).
  • Conduct site surveys and integrate existing conditions into the design.
  • Provide technical support during construction: review of shop drawings, responses to RFIs, inspections, and commissioning.
  • Participate in technical meetings with clients, suppliers, and partners.
  • Mentor and support the development of less experienced engineers and technicians.
  • Contribute to meeting schedules, budgets, and health, safety, and quality requirements.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Minimum of 6 years of specific experience in the design of heavy mechanical equipment for hydroelectric facilities.
  • Member in good standing of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ) or eligible for immediate registration.
  • Ability to work independently, manage complex assignments, and provide sound technical recommendations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 15+ years of experience in the design of heavy mechanical equipment for hydroelectric facilities.
  • Proficiency in English, both spoken and written (for occasional assignments outside Québec).
  • Excellent communication skills and strong attention to detail.
  • Experience with AutoCAD and/or Revit software.
  • Experience working within multidisciplinary internal teams.
  • Knowledge of French, both spoken and written.
