Today we are confirming our search for a Manager Property Accounting who will be a hands on leader responsible for the accurate and timely accounting of a portfolio of properties. The role balances day to day property accounting work with direct management of a small team and practical improvements to systems and processes. This Manager ensures strong execution, consistency, and reliability across the property accounting function while reducing the operational workload of the Director. In addition to the duties expected of a high performing seasoned accounting professional, responsibilities will include:
Property Accounting and Reporting
- Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual accounting and reporting for an assigned portfolio of properties.
- Prepare and review journal entries, accruals, and adjustments related to property operations, capital activity, and renovations.
- Complete and review bank reconciliations, general ledger reconciliations, and month end close activities.
- Ensure financial statements are accurate, complete, and delivered on time.
- Prepare variance analysis and simple performance summaries for property operations and management.
- Maintain supporting schedules including property taxes, utilities, and other recurring items.
People Leadership and Daily Oversight
- Lead, engage, and support a small team of property accountants, setting clear expectations and modelling strong accountability.
- Build a high performing team culture focused on accuracy, ownership, and follow through.
- Review work for quality and completeness, providing timely coaching and constructive feedback.
- Set priorities, manage workloads, and ensure deadlines are consistently met without sacrificing quality.
- Train, onboard, and develop team members to build capability, confidence, and consistency in execution.
- Address performance issues directly and fairly, reinforcing standards and supporting improvement.
- Create a collaborative, engaged and respectful team environment where issues are surfaced early and solved quickly.
Processes, Systems, and Improvements
- Ensure established accounting processes are followed consistently across the portfolio.
- Identify gaps, errors, or inefficiencies in day to day processes and implement practical improvements.
- Support basic budgeting and forecasting activities by coordinating inputs and validating numbers.
- Assist with audits by preparing schedules, responding to questions, and ensuring documentation is complete.
- Use Yardi and related tools effectively and help the team adopt more efficient ways of working.
- Take on detailed work that would otherwise sit with the Director, freeing them to focus on higher level priorities.
Operations Support
- Work closely with property management teams to answer questions, explain results, and resolve issues.
- Support tracking and reporting of work order, maintenance, and renovation activity as needed.
- Respond to ad hoc requests and issues related to property accounting.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
- CPA designation is an asset but not required.
- Five plus years of hands on accounting experience, preferably in property accounting or real estate.
- Proven experience managing and developing an accounting team, including setting expectations, reviewing work, and providing regular feedback.
- Demonstrated ability to build a reliable, engaged, and high performing team through clear direction, coaching, and accountability.
- Strong attention to detail with a willingness to roll up your sleeves and work directly in the numbers alongside the team.
- Practical experience identifying gaps, improving processes, and strengthening day to day execution.
- Ability to prioritize work, manage multiple deadlines, and keep the team focused in a fast paced environment.
- Clear, straightforward communication style with the ability to explain accounting information to non finance partners.
- Bilingualism in English and French is preferred.
- Experience with Yardi is a strong asset.
Most importantly, we are a small yet mighty team. This is a roll up your sleeves, help where you are needed kind of role. We are looking for a new team member who will support our success when and as needed, as our team will do for you when you need it.
The approximate salary range for this role is $80,000–$100,000 per year. Final compensation will be determined based on a variety of factors including skills, experience, educational attainment, professional designations, internal equity, and other job related requirements. We recognize that individuals bring different skill sets, strengths, and career experiences, and we encourage candidates at all stages of their career to apply. If your experience or compensation expectations differ from the posted range, we still welcome your application, as we value potential, growth, and the unique contributions each person can bring to our team.
