Position: Property Assistant

Start date: As soon as possible

Location: Ottawa- various L'Arche Ottawa homes

Hourly rate: $ $31.40 commensurate with experience

Duration: Part-time (24 hours per week)

Responsible To: Property Manager

L'Arche Ottawa is seeking a Property Assistant to support the care, safety, and upkeep of our homes. This hands-on role focuses on carpentry and general residential maintenance, supporting a safe and welcoming environment for community members.

This position is well suited to someone with solid practical experience who values meaningful work, flexibility, and collaboration within a values-based community.

Location: Multiple locations including our office located in the Nepean district of Ottawa, Ontario, with the flexibility to travel and work remotely to support other agencies.

Key Responsibilities

Property & Home Maintenance

  • Complete routine maintenance and minor repairs across L'Arche Ottawa homes
  • Perform hands-on carpentry work (repairs, painting, drywall, fixtures, minor renovations)
  • Identify maintenance issues and prioritize work to ensure timely completion
  • Prepare homes for new community members (e.g., bedroom set-up, repairs, painting)
  • Carry out additional duties related to property and maintenance as assigned by the Property Manager or Community Leader.
  • Support purchasing of maintenance equipment or appliances as directed by the Property Manager or Community Leader and in alignment with approved budgets

Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Support compliance with fire, safety, and accessibility standards
  • Participate in property inspections and follow up on action items
  • Document maintenance work and report concerns as needed

Coordination & Communication

  • Communicate clearly and respectfully with house teams, contractors, and suppliers
  • Coordinate external contractors when specialized work is required
  • Work collaboratively within the L'Arche community, respecting its culture and values

Qualifications & Experience

Required

  • Minimum 3–4 years of hands-on residential maintenance experience
  • Strong carpentry skills (repairs, finishing, basic construction)
  • Experience with general home maintenance (painting, drywall, fixtures, basic repairs)
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel between homes
  • Possession of personal basic hand tools required to complete routine maintenance tasks

Assets

  • Experience working in community-based or residential settings
  • Familiarity with health and safety standards
  • Experience coordinating with contractors or suppliers

Work Schedule

  • Part-time position of approximately 24 hours per week
  • Flexible scheduling, arranged in consultation with the Programs Coordinator and based on operational needs

Physical Requirements

  • This role involves hands-on maintenance work and may include lifting, bending, climbing ladders, and the use of hand and power tools.
