The Student Recruiter – Advisor is a member of the Faculty of Science team. Reporting to the Manager, Academic Planning and Review, the Student Recruiter – Advisor connects with prospective students and key influencers (family members, school counsellors, community members etc.) to promote the undergraduate and the graduate engineering and tech programs within the Faculty of Science through high school visits to conduct workshops, on-campus events, and visits to our partner colleges across British Columbia. This position will also provide information and guidance regarding program offerings, admission requirements, and registration information to prospective students and applicants. The Student Recruiter – Advisor assists with the planning and implementation of a variety of campus recruitment initiatives such as open houses, tours, faculty events, calling campaigns, mailings and electronic communications with prospective students, applicants, new admittances, families and school counsellors.

MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and deliver a variety of workshops to high school students at TRU and at high schools in collaboration with faculty.

  • Develop relationships with our partner colleges to recruit students to the second year. Work collaboratively with other post-secondary institutions to improve student recruitment activities.

  • Create strategies leading to multiple touch points with students interested in the tech programs, and to increase the conversion rates.

  • Review our website to ensure that the web content is appealing to the students, current and accurate. Review the websites of our partner colleges to ensure that there is information on transferring to TRU, and that this information is current.

  • Collaborate with the applicable committees to plan and host tech related workshops and events.

  • Maintain an inventory of swag, banners and other recruitment related materials.

  • Work with the Manager, Academic Planning & Review to develop an annual recruitment plan with a list of events and the planned travel.

  • Conduct appropriate follow-up with contacts made with prospective students and counsellors during off-campus visits.

  • Review the applications for the "not qualified" students to suggest a pathway to Engineering.

  • Prepare and analyze reports on application, admission and conversion numbers and determine where recruitment resources are best allocated.

  • Advise prospective Faculty of Science students, school counsellors, and others on academic offerings, admission requirements, and/or required prerequisite studies. Provide information on housing, scholarships, and other services available to TRU students. Advising takes place in areas such as secondary schools and career/education fairs, as well as with individual students and their families visiting TRU. Advising also takes place through telephone, electronic mail and web-based correspondence.

  • Provide educational plans and first-year planning prior to admission.

  • Build and maintain relationships with relevant on-campus and off-campus community networks using various forms of media, including social media platforms.

  • Promote the tech programs through media.

  • In collaboration with faculty and staff from the department and representatives from the Future Students Office, plan and conduct on-campus recruitment and conversion events, including campus tours, enrolment workshops, interactive online chats and other types of virtual meetings with prospective students, applicants and newly admitted students.

  • Assist with updating recruitment materials and publications, collect and reviews data, write communications, and develop presentations. This will involve collaboration with various internal departments/partners (e.g. Admissions, Academic Advising, Marketing & Communications, Faculties, etc.).

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:

  • A four-year baccalaureate degree

EXPERIENCE:

  • One year of related experience in a post-secondary environment where public speaking and/or group facilitation was part of the responsibilities

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE OR ABILITIES RELATED TO THE JOB

  • Demonstrated ability to conduct effective presentations
  • Ability to communicate effectively to, and deal courteously and tactfully with, culturally diverse audiences, verbally and in writing
  • Event planning skills
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Knowledge of University academic policies, admission requirements and program information
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of various social media platforms to connect with audiences, including content marketing and engagement
  • Proficiency with MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Teams, Zoom, relational databases (i.e., Banner) and other computer software
  • Ability to deal courteously and tactfully with students, parents, campus partners and the general public
  • Maintains and contributes to a positive and respectful workplace environment
  • Ability to set priorities, multi-task, work with minimal supervision and remain focused on objectives
  • Ability to travel independently by road and air travel
  • Ability to coordinate office workload, complete and coordinate necessary planning and communication tasks while travelling
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver's license with no restrictions that would prevent required travel

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Local travel required. Some overnight travel required within BC and Alberta. This position will spend time off-campus visiting schools and our partner colleges. Travel will also be required to deliver workshops to high school students and to host off-site events.
  • Standing for long periods of time on concrete floors during events
  • Repetitive lifting and carrying items weighing up to 20 kg (up and down school and event centre stairs, in and out of vehicles, through inclement weather, etc.)
  • Set up of computer/audiovisual equipment and tables and chairs at off-site locations on a frequent basis
  • Flexibility in work hours; some evening and weekend work required
