ABOUT THE ROLE
Garden River First Nation (GRFN) is seeking a Mineral Development Coordinator to support our Lands & Resources Department in protecting our lands, rights, and interests while building opportunities in the mineral sector.
This role ensures that community voices are heard in mining-related decision-making, while fostering education, awareness, and partnerships that benefit GRFN.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Ø Review exploration plans, permits, and closure plans under Ontario's Mining Act.
Ø Liaise with government, industry, and GRFN leadership on mining-related activities.
Ø Support community awareness of mining processes, their impacts, and the opportunities they present.
Ø Facilitate agreements (e.g., Early Exploration, Impact Benefit Agreements).
Ø Use GIS/digital mapping to track traditional land use and mineral development.
Ø Advise on policies, regulations, and potential impacts to Indigenous and treaty rights.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
Ø Post-secondary education in environmental studies, sciences, engineering, geology, resource development, or related fields.
Ø Minimum 2-5 years relevant experience in mineral, environmental, or resource-related work.
Ø Knowledge of the Mining Act, Indigenous legal, policy and research, especially in respect of the federal and/or provincial government; some government policy or program experience is preferred, and mineral exploration processes (asset).
Ø Strong communication, negotiation, and community engagement skills.
Ø High level of tact, discretion, and cultural awareness of First Nation traditions.
Ø Advanced knowledge of the mining sequence and Mining Act approvals and timelines, technical knowledge and expertise regarding mineral exploration methods and terminology.
Ø Computer proficiency
Ø Must provide a clear criminal record check before employment (At applicant's Expense).
