Furniture Refinishing - Labour shop hand

Furniture restoration and finishing business in search of Furniture Finishing Shop Assistant.

This is a Full-time position, 40 hours weekly at $19-$23 per hour (negotiable depending on experience and qualifications). Schedule is M-F.

A strong attention to detail is an absolute priority.

Will train and develop employees who show strong ability and initiative.

Requirements:

  • 1 year in the finishing/restoration industry, related industry or hobby industry. Have a portfolio? We would love to see your work
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Familiar with spray equipment and spray guns
  • Ability to lift and move various types of furniture (50lbs+)
  • Ability to work on one's feet for long periods of time
  • Strong mechanical ability - familiar with hand tools and power tools.
  • WHMIS certification
  • Ability to read, write and speak English
  • Ability to see colour and shades

Description:

  • Remove old finishes and damaged parts, using hand tools, stripping tools, sandpaper, steel wool, abrasives, and solvents
  • Ability to brush, spray, or hand-rub finishing ingredients, such as paint, oil, stain, lacquer, polyurethane.
  • Disassemble items to prepare them for finishing, using hand tools.
  • Fill and smooth cracks or depressions, remove marks and imperfections, and repair broken parts, using plastic or wood putty, glue, nails, and/or screws
  • Reassemble pieces using wood glues and epoxies
  • Remove accessories and hardware prior to finishing. Mask areas that should not be exposed to finishing processes or substances
  • Smooth, shape, and touch-up surfaces to prepare them for finishing, using sandpaper, steel wool, sanders, or hand tools
  • Use bleaching agents on wood surfaces to restore natural colour and remove stains
  • Wash surfaces to prepare them for finish application
  • Inventory
  • Shop cleaning and organizing
  • Other shop duties as required

Additional skills, not required, considered a bonus:

  • Understanding of finishing ingredients to obtain desired consistency, colours or shades.
  • Carpentry skills
  • Upholstery skills

Shop Environment:

  • Safety first
  • Power tool use, can be noisy
  • Sanding and power tool use, can be dusty
  • Strong odours can be present from use of strippers, cleaners and finishes.

Full-time hours: 40 hours per week
