Compensation: $20,600 and room (in residence) and board in compensation for providing after hours and weekend on-call support (on-call rotation will be shared between two Residence Care Coordinators and the Manager, Residence Life). Both room and board are taxable benefits.

POSITION SUMMARY

St. Michael's College is looking to hire an experienced care coordinator to oversee a residence community comprising over 650 students living across a variety of residence buildings on campus. Reporting to and working closely with the Manager, Residence Life, the Residence Care Coordinators (RCC) are responsible for helping to ensure the professional care and positive living environment of students within the residence community. The RCCs help to oversee the promotion and fostering of a friendly, diverse community of residents and an atmosphere of academic success, personal growth, community belonging, and individual wellbeing. Along with the Manager, Student Wellness, the RCCs also help to train and support the work of live-in student dons.

The primary duties of the RCC focus on the provision of appropriate holistic care and support for students in residence. These duties include regular emergency and on-call after-hours support; resolution and/or investigation of student conduct issues; participation within the SMC Care team; and frequent liaison with and, where appropriate, referrals to a variety of student supports (including, but not limited to, advisors within the Registrar's Office, the Wellness Manager, Health and Wellness supports, local after-hours crisis care teams). The successful candidates will be expected to respond to a variety of student crisis situations and to work with relevant colleagues on appropriate follow-ups, referrals, and care plans. They will also be expected to work with colleagues, dons, and students to develop programming within the residence that works proactively to minimize the possibility of student conduct issues and/or student crisis and to encourage a positive, friendly environment that supports academic and personal growth within the College and the University. This is a live-in position.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Student Care

  • Under the management of the Manager, Residence Life and the Manager of Student Wellness and in collaboration with stakeholders within the SMC Care team, plan, facilitate, and implement programming aimed at promoting personal growth, community responsibility, wellness, and academic success among residence students.
  • Maintain up-to-date connections and knowledge about offices and resources at SMC, U of T, and local crisis support to assist students with a wide variety of residence life, academic, financial, and personal issues.
  • Resolve minor interpersonal disputes between students and/or student staff.
  • Interpret applicable guidelines and protocols to determine policy violations and advise management accordingly.
  • Respond in person to urgent resident issues that occur outside of regular business hours and act, report, and refer appropriately according to established standards.
  • Serve on various committees related to residence life.
  • Keep management informed of significant residence problems and/or issues.
  • Support students with dietary accommodations, providing one-on-one support and collaborating with students to establish individual allergen and/or dietary accommodation risk management plans.
  • Hold regular drop-in hours for residents, acting as a resource for one-on-one consultation and problem solving.
  • In collaboration with the SMC Care Team, provide individual support to residents regarding hospital discharge planning, after the initial crisis period has passed, to help reintegrate into the residence community and implement treatment/support plan.

Student Community

  • Help to plan and facilitate residence orientation for first-year residents.
  • In coordination with the Office of Residences and Student Operation, track arrival dates of incoming students who arrive after move-in day and ensure appropriate welcome and support.
  • Provide resource information, individual support (where appropriate), and referrals for students who are experiencing difficulties.
  • Chair the Food Service Committee (assist with the composition of the committee/appointing members, communicate opportunities for resident feedback, and facilitate monthly meetings in collaboration with Conference Services and food services provider).
  • Supervise the Student Food Ambassador, including supporting the recruitment, hiring and day-to-day supervision of the Student Food Ambassador.
  • In collaboration with the Manager, Residence Life, provide training, oversight, and mentorship to the St. Mike's Residence Council (SMRC) and the various House Councils.
  • Assist the SMRC and Loretto House Councils in organizing their community-building events throughout the year.
  • Oversee the appropriate appointment of members of the SMRC elections.

Don Training and Support

  • In collaboration with the Manager, Residence Life and the Manager, Student Wellness, liaise with appropriate College and University offices to organize and facilitate the training of student residence dons.
  • Help to edit and update the don Training Handbook.
  • In collaboration with the Manager, Residence Life, ensure that all dons have consistent training and knowledge on how to identify students in distress/concerning behaviours; receive disclosures; address and refer issues of concern; arrange additional training sessions as needed throughout the year.
  • Alongside the Manager, Residence Life, supervise and evaluate the work of the dons, providing additional training and mentorship and/or discipline when necessary.
  • Participate in the don hiring process.
  • In collaboration with the Manager, Residence Life, provide regular check-ins with dons to learn about any issues to provide guidance, and, where necessary, intervene or refer to address complex situations.
  • Promptly review don incident reports and follow up and/or refer as necessary.
  • Oversee the scheduling of the 'Dons on Duty' and weekly rounds system.
  • Meet with dons regularly to review and advise on programming initiatives.

Other

  • Develop monthly active and passive programming on issues of importance to the university community.
  • Help plan, promote, and attend off-campus residence initiatives and field trips.
  • Investigate damages within the residence buildings and make recommendations for appropriate restitution.
  • Other duties and special projects as required.

WORK CONDITIONS

  • Live-in position. Shared office space. Flexible working hours to accommodate student schedules and/or events. Regular on-call after hours duties.

EXPERIENCE

  • At least two years of proven leadership and/or supervision in a university or related setting.
  • At least two years of experience providing guidance/para-counselling in a university or related setting.
  • Experience in advising and referrals, programming, community management, and adjudicating student conduct in a post-secondary residence community.
  • Experience working with diverse student communities.
  • Demonstrated experience providing support to individuals in distress, issues management, and monitoring crisis response and intervention.
  • Experience in student life programming an asset.
  • U of T experience and knowledge of U of T resources and protocols an asset.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's Degree

Master of Social Work or other related degree
