Area Of Responsibility
Reporting to the Spvr, Neighborhood Out & Dev, the Coordinator is responsible for providing advice and counsel on all issues relating to the coordination and implementation of projects in the Community Safety and Well-Being Office. The role will also act as a point of contact for corporate leaders, stakeholders, residents, and community groups. The incumbent will work on various functions related to the analysis of issues and concerns related to community safety & well-being and work collaboratively to identify possible solutions based on benchmarking and existing research. The incumbent will also assist in supporting the Brampton Community Safety Advisory Committee.
Supervise tasks performed by interns and co-op students assigned to the division, as well as volunteers.
Key Accountabilities
Operation Support:
- Advise in the design and development of and execution of the City's Community Safety and Well-Being Office, the City's Term of Council Priorities and support the overall strategic direction of the City with respect to safety and well-being.
- Provide advice to the Brampton Community Safety Advisory Committee and associated sub-committees as needed.
- Provide support with the implementation of the Regional Community Safety and Well-Being Plan initiatives within the jurisdiction of the City of Brampton.
- Identify risk factors in Brampton including, but not limited to, factors that contribute to crime, victimization, social disorder, reduced safety of vulnerable population and any other prescribed risk factors.
- Identify strategies to reduce the prioritized risks including providing new services, changing existing services, improving the integration of existing service or coordinating existing services in a different way.
- Provide advisory subject matter expertise to the Corporation, stakeholders, residents, and community groups.
- Coordinate, or participate in coordination, of activities implemented by the section including plan development, training, exercises, public education, special events, and town halls.
- Keep informed on local, provincial, and federal government relations initiatives that support the City of Brampton's priorities.
- Prepare documents, correspondence, and reports for presentation to Council and senior management.
Customer Service And Teamwork
- Act as an advisory subject matter expert, provide guidance and advice to resolve customer concerns that meet customer expectations and escalate complex issues to appropriate level.
- Build and maintain a relationship with cross-functional departments, team and management to ensure a thorough understanding of operational needs.
- Develop ways to engage residents in building capacity and move from traditional roles of solely staff developed and implemented strategies.
- Demonstrate corporate values at all times.
Communication And Reporting
- Work in close partnership with Strategic Communication Division to develop communication plans.
- Provide management with updates and status on issues or concerns relating to policies, practices and procedures as required to meet corporate service standards. Formulates new policies or modifies existing ones as required.
- Present and convey complex concepts and conditions to stakeholders; develop reports, proposals and make recommendations to management for effective decision-making.
- Participate in fairs and events to promote initiatives within the division.
- Create and maintain documentation and ensure necessary sign-offs and approvals meet policies and confidentiality.
Corporate Contribution
- Conduct research and analysis using internal and external resources to gain insight of market trends, current programs, processes, policies and practices to support management and recommend ways to improve business processes, service solutions and best practices.
- Anticipate, assess and evaluate internal and external factors that affect the division's ability to achieve corporate goals, and recommend strategies to implement measures and mitigate risks.
- Maintain knowledge of collective agreements, City policies and practices, legislation, regulations, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Responsible for contributing to the City's Term of Council Priorities related to community safety and well-being.
- Responsible for genuinely engaging and collaborating across the Corporation to reduce silos, receive and provide valuable input, to streamline operations and to ultimately contribute to Brampton being a well-run city.
Relationship Management
- Actively participate and represent the City of Brampton on all community safety and well-being related internal and external opportunities and stay informed and connected about provincial and national related strategies.
- Build and maintain cross-functional relationships with the community, staff, academic professionals as well as all levels of government, and national and international agencies.
SELECTION CRITERIA
Education
- Post-secondary degree emergency management, public safety or equivalent in related field.
Required Experience
- 5-7 years related experience.
- 1-3 years supervisory experience is an asset; ability to guide staff.
Other Skills And Assets
- Collaborative and respectful team member willing to communicate openly and honestly to achieve divisional goals.
- Practical knowledge of Municipal, Regional, Provincial, and Federal government practices is an asset.
- Strong organizational skills, and able to prioritize multiple complex tasks and activities meeting conflicting priorities and timelines.
- Ability to effectively synthesis information, present findings and provide recommendations to various audiences.
- Ability to apply an equity lens to all initiatives by exploring multiple perspectives.
- A comprehensive understanding of underlying root causes and their relationship to criminal behavior.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in anti-oppression programs, sensitive to culture, race and class issues in the social housing context.
- Strong analytical skills for complex problem solving.
- Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office/software.
