Role Overview
The Senior Tax Professional is the highest-level technical tax preparer within the practice. This role prepares and reviews complex returns, supports audit-related matters, and provides technical guidance to junior and mid-level tax staff.
The ideal candidate has strong experience in personal taxation, advanced tax problem-solving ability, and a passion for mentoring others.
Key Responsibilities
1. Advanced Tax Preparation
- Prepare
complex T1 personal tax returns
, including: - Self-employed and small business income,
- Rental property schedules
- Multiple income sources and multi-year filings
- Investment income, capital gains, and foreign reporting (T1135)
- Pension income splitting and specialized deductions
- Ensure all filings comply with current tax legislation and best practices.
2. Review & Quality Control
- Review returns prepared by Tax Professionals and Tax Associates.
- Ensure accuracy, consistency, and proper documentation in all tax filings.
- Provide clear, actionable feedback to help staff improve technical skills.
- Identify tax savings opportunities and areas requiring deeper analysis.
3. CRA Review & Audit Support
- Assist clients with:
- CRA review letters
- Reassessments
- Audit documentation requests
- Communicate professionally with clients to explain processes and next steps.
- Advise staff on proper handling of CRA correspondence.
4. Staff Mentoring & Technical Leadership
- Support the development of Tax Professionals and Tax Associates through coaching.
- Train staff in tax rules, software use, documentation standards, and workflow.
- Serve as the internal technical resource for questions on complex scenarios.
- Contribute to seasonal training sessions and continuous learning efforts.
5. Software & Workflow Expertise
- Use tax preparation software at an advanced level (e.g., iFirm TaxPrep, TaxCycle, ProFile, or similar).
- Guide team members in efficient digital file management and e-filing processes.
- Maintain strong documentation practices and ensure adherence to security standards.
Qualifications & Experience
Required
- 5+ years
of Canadian personal tax preparation experience. - Strong technical proficiency with
complex T1
returns. - Experience supporting or preparing files for
CRA reviews or audits
. - Previous experience reviewing returns prepared by other staff.
- Strong communication and mentoring abilities.
- Experience managing the tax floor, leading a team of preparers
Preferred
- Previous
T2 Corporation Income Tax Return
experience - Familiarity with bookkeeping or cloud accounting systems.
