Driven Litigator: Commercial +/or Family

Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada RDM Lawyers Full time

This Opportunity:

We're looking for a litigator who is hungry for responsibility, motivated by autonomy, and excited to build a practice with real momentum. Our current needs sit within Commercial Litigation and Family Law, and this role is well-suited to someone who wants to practice exclusively in one of those areas or intentionally build a practice that includes both.

Our litigation team is comfortable flexing its muscles across practice areas in a way that aligns with individual goals. We value lawyers who are curious, adaptable, and energized by variety, while still respecting that depth in a primary practice area matters. If you like having ownership over your files, thinking strategically, and being trusted to practice law like a professional (not a cog), you'll feel at home here.

Depending on your background and interests, your practice may include:

  • Running Family Law files from start to finish, including complex and contested matters
  • Handling Commercial Litigation matters, from pleadings through resolution
  • Working directly with clients and taking ownership of your files
  • Collaborating with other litigators and solicitors when files overlap or strategy benefits from multiple perspectives

This role is not about fitting into a predefined box. It's about drive, judgment, and a genuine interest in doing good work for clients. You'll be supported by strong legal assistants who know their roles and do them well, and by colleagues who are generous with their time, ideas, and experience.

Who are you?

You're a litigator who wants ownership over your practice and the freedom to shape it intentionally.

You might be:

  • A Family lawyer who wants to practice exclusively in Family Law, or maintain a Family-focused practice while selectively expanding into Commercial Litigation
  • A Commercial Litigator who wants to practice exclusively in Commercial Litigation, or who is interested in developing a complementary Family Law practice
  • A litigator who already practices in both areas and wants the flexibility to continue doing so

Your role within the team will be shaped around your goals, strengths, and interests. You'll be surrounded by colleagues who are comfortable flexing their litigation muscles across practice areas as needed, in a way that supports both your practice and the firm as a whole.

We expect experience, but we're far less interested in counting years than in understanding what you've actually done. Trial experience is an asset. Strong file ownership, sound judgment, and the confidence to take initiative matter more.

Most importantly, you are:

  • Self-directed and motivated
  • Comfortable with autonomy and accountability
  • Interested in building something, not just maintaining it
  • Energized by responsibility rather than intimidated by it

Who are we?

We're a full-service firm rooted in the Fraser Valley, and we've been a pillar of the legal community since 1971. From our original Abbotsford office to our expansion into Langley in 2023, we've grown thoughtfully, staying grounded in our values while evolving with the profession.

For generations, we've supported families, businesses, and individuals across the region. Our lawyers are known for legal excellence paired with a human approach, and we're proud to be one of the most trusted and respected firms in the Fraser Valley.

You'll be joining a collaborative group of litigators, solicitors, and support staff who are generous in sharing knowledge, files, and opportunities. Our culture is rooted in trust, autonomy, and flexibility, giving each lawyer space to grow their practice while knowing they have support when needed.

What that looks like in practice:

  • Collaborative Growth: You'll have space to grow your practice, with colleagues who are generous in sharing files, knowledge, and opportunities
  • Real Responsibility: You won't just assist, you'll run files, work directly with clients, and make judgment calls with senior support when you need it
  • Support Without Micromanagement: Guidance and mentorship are there, but autonomy is the default
  • Flexibility That Works: In-office, or a hybrid blend, we trust our lawyers to meet their professional obligations and build strong client relationships
  • Future-Focused Leadership: We're intentional about evolving with the profession, embracing technology and new ideas that help us serve clients better

Diversity and Inclusion:
We're committed to creating a workplace where everyone feels they belong. Our team reflects the diverse communities we serve, and we believe our different perspectives only make us stronger. You'll be joining a firm that's not only inclusive but genuinely welcoming.

Compensation:
We offer flexible compensation structures designed to meet you where you're at, from salary to fee split, or a blend of base plus commission. Let's talk about what works for you and your goals. We also offer extended health and dental benefits, as well as parental leave and some other perks.

Interested?

If this sounds like the kind of practice you want to build, we'd love to hear from you. If timing isn't quite right, we're always happy to add strong candidates to our virtual bench.

All inquiries are kept in strict confidence.
