JOB PURPOSE:
The Building Maintenance personnel is responsible for ensuring the cleanliness, safety, functionality, and upkeep of all Kitaskinaw Education Authority (KEA) buildings and grounds. This role involves performing preventive maintenance, responding to repair requests, supporting seasonal operations, and collaborating closely with the Facilities Manager to ensure KEA facilities meet health, safety, and operational standards. The position will support two general sites—North Campus and South Campus—as well as additional facilities as needed.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
Facility Maintenance & Repairs
•Conduct routine inspections of interior and exterior areas at both North and South Campuses to identify maintenance issues or safety hazards.
•Perform hands-on repairs and upkeep, including:
Minor plumbing (e.g., fixing leaks, unclogging drains, replacing fixtures)
Basic electrical work (e.g., replacing ballast, switches, light fixtures)
Carpentry (e.g., patching walls, installing hardware, fixing doors and furniture)
HVAC troubleshooting and filter replacements
Minor drywall repairs and interior painting
•Ensure safe and functional operation of mechanical systems, boilers, ventilation units, and heating systems.
Preventative Maintenance
•Maintain and follow a scheduled preventative maintenance plan to extend the life of equipment and infrastructure.
•Monitor and service life-safety systems, including fire alarms, emergency lighting, extinguishers, and first aid kits.
•Inspect roofs, gutters, and exterior drainage systems for wear, leaks, or blockages.
•Track and log regular inspections and updates to building systems.
Custodial & Grounds Support
•Support cleaning and sanitation needs during high-traffic events, emergencies, or seasonal surges.
•Assist with landscaping and snow removal duties, including salting walkways and clearing entrances.
•Ensure proper waste management and recycling practices on both campuses.
•Oversee supply and equipment inventory for janitorial and maintenance materials.
Site Operations & Safety
•Set up and dismantle rooms, furniture, gym equipment, or event layouts as requested by education staff.
•Ensure that all areas (classrooms, hallways, mechanical rooms, playgrounds, etc.) are safe, secure, and free of hazards.
•Maintain compliance with all Occupational Health and Safety regulations and KEA protocols.
•Respond quickly to urgent facility issues (e.g., water leaks, electrical failures) to ensure minimal disruption to educational programming.
Contractor Coordination & Project Support
•Liaise with external contractors or technicians during specialized repair or renovation work.
•Escort service providers on-site and ensure safety compliance during contracted jobs.
•Assist with planning and executing facility upgrades or capital projects in coordination with the Facilities Manager.
Record-Keeping & Reporting
•Maintain accurate logs of maintenance requests, completed work, equipment servicing, and materials used.
•Submit regular reports and updates to the Facilities Manager regarding site conditions, incidents, and outstanding needs.
•Help develop a facilities maintenance calendar and input into long-term infrastructure planning.
Support for School Activities & Emergencies
•Provide logistical and operational support during school events, after-hours programming, or emergencies.
•Be available for on-call maintenance support during off-hours or weekends, as needed.
SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
●Project Management: Ability to plan, organize, and execute complex projects, including setting goals, establishing timelines, and managing resources effectively.
●Communication Skills: Clear and compelling written and verbal communication skills to convey information, provide feedback, and facilitate collaboration among diverse stakeholders.
●Adaptability: Flexibility and resilience to adapt to changing circumstances, address unforeseen challenges, and adjust program activities to meet the evolving needs of students and stakeholders.

●Safety and First Aid: Knowledge of safety protocols and procedures to ensure students' well-being and physical safety in sports and recreational activities, including maintaining first aid and CPR certification.
● Technology Proficiency: Proficiency in using technology tools and platforms for communication, scheduling, and data management, such as email, Microsoft Office, and digital collaboration tools.
●Knowledge of Cree culture, language, and traditions is a strong asset.
●Remains positive and constructive when faced with challenges or adversity.
●Demonstrates responsibility, reliability, and trustworthiness.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND REQUIREMENTS:
•High school diploma or GED required.
•Journeyman certification and Red Seal endorsement in a trade related to building maintenance (e.g., plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry) is required.
•Minimum 2 years of experience in facility or building maintenance.
•Must provide a clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening and a Child Intervention Record Check.
SKILLS & ABILITIES:
•Strong knowledge of building systems, maintenance standards, and health/safety regulations.
•Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.
•Physically capable of performing duties that require lifting, climbing, standing, and operating equipment.
•Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently or in a team setting.
•Must be able to work in a high-paced, structured environment with high foot traffic, particularly within school settings.
•Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
•Effective communication and time management skills.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
•Valid driver's license and reliable transportation, class 4 is an asset
•Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends if needed.
•Awareness and respect for working in Indigenous educational environments.
Understanding of Indigenous culture and values is an asset.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
●In office, technological equipment is provided.
●Work is performed across two general sites—North and South Campuses—and other KEA facilities as needed.
●Manual labour and heavy lifting are required as part of daily duties.
●May involve exposure to dust, chemicals, noise, and varying temperatures depending on the task.
●Full-time, Monday to Friday, 9:00-5:00 pm (hours may vary)
●Must be willing to work after hours and during weekends.
●Must be willing to attend on-site and off-site training
●Able to travel as requested.
