About the Role
We are seeking an experienced
Project Accountant
to oversee the financial performance of multiple construction projects ranging from
$10M to $100M+
. Reporting to the Controller, this role ensures strong financial governance, accurate reporting, and consistent application of best practices. The Project Accountant will play a key role in analyzing job profitability, managing project budgets, overseeing payables and receivables, and maintaining strong relationships with vendors, trades, and clients.
Key Responsibilities:
Accounts Payable (AP) Management
- Oversee the full AP cycle, including receipt, verification, coding, and processing of vendor invoices.
- Ensure invoices align with contracts, purchase orders, and supporting documents; investigate and resolve discrepancies promptly.
- Prepare and execute weekly payment runs (EFTs, cheques, and other disbursements), ensuring accuracy and approval compliance.
- Reconcile vendor statements and maintain accurate AP aging reports.
Accounts Receivable (AR) Management
- Generate and allocate timely, accurate billings in coordination with the Project Management team.
- Work directly with clients to ensure billing requirements and timelines are met.
- Provide supplemental documentation as needed.
- Post cash receipts and monitor collections to maintain strong cash flow.
- Perform frequent, detailed project reconciliations.
Project Costing & Budgeting
- Oversee monthly project costing and budgeting, ensuring all variances are identified and accounted for.
- Review and ensure accurate, timely billing of all change orders.
- Prepare monthly project summaries, including cost and revenue analysis.
Financial Reporting & Analysis
- Analyze monthly payroll and prepare related journal entries.
- Complete monthly bank reconciliations and report on cash position to the Controller.
- Review, prepare, and file monthly HST returns.
- Assist with year-end working papers and support external auditors as needed.
- Contribute to monthly project forecasting and variance analysis.
Qualifications
- Minimum
3+ years of experience
in construction accounting, project accounting, or a related field. - Experience supervising or mentoring team members.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience with
Premier Construction Software
considered an asset.
