In addition to our day-school academic programs, SuOn Academy operates an Academic Learning Centre that provides structured writing support, literacy skills training, and communication-focused programs for our high school students.

We are currently seeking a G9–12 Academic Writing & Literacy Instructor to lead two of our core literacy programs:

  • Academic Writing & Essay Lab (Grades 9–12)
  • OSSLT Literacy Bootcamp (Grade 10 focus, open to all high school students)

Program Overview

1. Academic Writing & Essay Lab (G9–12)

This program helps students strengthen:

  • Academic writing foundations
  • Essay structure and organization
  • Thesis development and argumentation
  • Critical reading and textual analysis
  • Research skills and citation conventions
  • Clarity, coherence, and academic writing style

2. OSSLT Literacy Bootcamp

This short-term intensive program prepares students for Ontario's provincial literacy assessment by focusing on:

  • Reading comprehension
  • Summarizing and inference skills
  • Short writing tasks
  • News report writing
  • Opinion paragraph writing
  • Test-taking strategies and time management

Both programs are delivered in small groups at our school campus or online.

Position Summary

The Academic Writing & Literacy Instructor will guide high school students through structured writing and literacy activities, helping them improve their academic communication, critical thinking, and readiness for high school coursework, the OSSLT, and future university studies.

Responsibilities

  • Teach academic writing concepts and literacy skills using SuOn Academy's curriculum frameworks
  • Lead writing workshops, reading analysis sessions, and structured practice activities
  • Provide constructive feedback on students' writing to improve clarity, structure, and coherence
  • Prepare students for the OSSLT through targeted reading and writing exercises
  • Maintain a positive and professional classroom environment
  • Communicate student progress with the Academic Learning Centre coordinator
  • Participate in occasional planning meetings or training sessions

Qualifications

Required:

  • Strong proficiency in academic writing, English language arts, and literacy instruction
  • Ability to explain writing concepts clearly and guide students through structured improvement
  • University degree (or current student) in English, Education, Linguistics, Humanities, or related programs

Preferred:

  • Experience working with high school learners (G9–12)
  • Familiarity with Ontario Secondary School literacy expectations
  • Experience supporting multilingual and international students
  • Knowledge of OSSLT formats, scoring, and task types (asset but not required)
