Role Purpose
The Human Resources Advisor is responsible for the strategic and operational support of core HR programs at the Fraser Surrey, Vancouver Island, and Saint John terminals and the Stevedoring business units. Additionally the HR Advisor is responsible for aiding in the development, implementation and/or completion of various DP World Canada HR projects as assigned.
This role is based out of Surrey and requires occasional travel to other operation locations, approximately quarterly.
About the Role
Coordinate key elements of the HR programs, including performance management, training and development, employee engagement, recruitment, employee relations, legal compliance, organizational policy and on-boarding.
Provide HR advisory services to employees, including support and counsel to management on a variety of people management issues.
Maintain and communicate the company's policies, procedures and human resource programs to ensure that they support corporate strategy and goals, and are in compliance with employment legislation.
Partner with managers in assessing training needs and skill gaps, and develop and monitor annual training and development budget to control costs.
Provide information to employees and/or their representatives on different options available in various situations (resignations, lay-offs, life insurance plans, disability insurance, divorce/separation and garnishment).
Initiate transactions such as leave, pay adjustments, appointments, transfers actions, pension and insurance plans by obtaining data from a variety of sources and determine/calculate entitlements, options, and obligations by preparing and issuing/submitting data, information, and responses.
Participate on projects by providing input such as system improvement initiatives, development, testing and implementation of our internal human resources systems.
About You
A degree and/or diploma in Human Resources and CPHR (preferred) and PCP designations; GBA or CEBS designation is an asset
At least 3 years' experience in an HR generalist role, with direct experience in pay and benefits.
Strong knowledge of employment-related legislation (e.g., Canada Labour Code, Human Rights), preferably in a unionized environment.
Proven experience in HR Metrics, recruitment, training and development plus employee relations.
Knowledge of current payroll practices and related statutory requirements, as well as procedures and controls involved in the production of payrolls and the enrolment, maintenance and discontinuance of benefit coverage.
Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to build and maintain good working relationships and achieve buy in and ownership to quality standards/ initiatives with all departments and levels.
Sound judgement and analytical thinking that enables decision making, ability to manage projects and prioritize and manage timelines.
A self-reliant person with strong communication and interpersonal skills capable of taking initiative and making decisions under time constraints.
