About the position: Grand Erie Public Health requires an exceptional student Field Technician to assist with West Nile Virus (WNV) mosquito and avian vector surveillance. The Technician will monitor adult mosquito populations, set up traps and conduct larvae dipping, all at various locations. The incumbent will then prepare reports on findings from those activities. As well, the Technician will help collect deceased birds for lab analysis.

Qualifications and Competencies:

• Enrolled in Environmental Studies, Wildlife Biology or Lab Technology at the university or college level.
• Excellent communication abilities and versatile computer skills.
• Demonstrate exceptional oral and written communication skills,
• Demonstrate excellent interpersonal, conflict resolution, and public relations skills.
• Ability to work effectively under minimal supervision is essential.
• A valid Ontario driver's license, car insurance, and access to a reliable vehicle are also required.
• Required to provide proof of immunization records including the full series of COVID-19 vaccination.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Examples of regular work duties include, but are not limited to the following:

• Effectively answer inquiries from the public related to West Nile Virus and Lyme Disease prevention.
• Set up, place, and monitor mosquito traps for mosquito breeding and conduct larvae dipping.
• To collect, record and analyze data in applicable record systems and compose reports. Interpretation and application of data required where applicable.
• To perform all administrative duties as required to fulfil necessary workplace processes (e.g. data entry into various computer systems/programs).

• To effectively communicate public health information and compliance requirements, both verbally and in writing.
• To collect, record and analyze data in applicable record systems and compose reports. Interpretation and application of data required where applicable.

Compensation & Benefits:

• Hourly Rate: $18.00 (plus 4% vacation pay)
• Benefits: opportunity to opt into OMERS pension plan

Terms of Employment:

70 hours in a two-week period from May through August 2026. Employment conditions are in accordance with the Grand Erie Public Health policies and procedures.
