The Experimental High Energy Physics Group in the Department of Physics at the University of Toronto is an important part of a dynamic research effort at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva Switzerland. They are engaged in a project that is comprised two subprojects; participation in the construction of a silicon detector (the ITk), and participation in upgrading the electronics for the liquid argon calorimeter. The project involves collaboration between Carleton University, University of Montreal, Simon Fraser University, McGill, TRIUMF, University of Toronto and York University.

Your opportunity:

The ITk project consists of the production of 1500 silicon detector modules incorporating silicon sensors and application specific integrated circuits mounted on hybrid flex circuits. Sensors are produced by Hamamatsu Photonics in Japan. They are quality controlled at Carleton University and Simon Fraser University. Sensors and hybrids are manufactured into modules at TRIUMF (Vancouver) and Toronto, in collaboration with Celestica Inc. During production, QC and QA is carried out at Montreal, York U., Toronto, and TRIUMF. As well as being supplied to Toronto and TRIUMF, hybrids are supplied to European sites in Germany and Spain. The modules are assembled into large units known as petals at TRIUMF, and then shipped to assembly sites in Europe. The overall budget for the project is $24 million. The ATLAS QA/QC Operator will work with the research scientists and students to ensure that all testing hardware is working properly, that the cleanroom infrastructure is maintained and that all procedures are being carried out according to the agreed specifications.

Under the general supervision of the Principal Investigator, the ATLAS QA/QC Operator provides technical support in precision mechanical assembly and module quality assurance throughout the duration of the ATLAS silicon module assembly project in the Greater Toronto Area. The incumbent is responsible for the testing and assessment of the produced silicon modules that include fragile, 300 microns thick, silicon wafers, custom-designed readout ASICs that are connected with O aluminum bond wires. The technician operates test equipment to ensure thatthese modules meet all the specifications for use in the experiment before they are shipped to the next step of the construction of the ATLAS tracker upgrade. Equipment used in the research includes computer-controlled systems such as optical inspection devices, a probe station, and electronics test and measurement equipment.

This is an 18-month opportunity, with a possibility of renewal. 

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Using an assessment checklist when performing sample quality control testing
  • Observing the condition of tested materials and recording the data
  • Recording the results of all inspection tests
  • Documenting and maintaining standard operating procedures
  • Applying established standards when cleaning lab, rooms and equipment
  • Identifying and reporting facility repair and/or maintenance needs
  • Troubleshooting routine equipment repairs
  • Paying close attention to occupational safety precautions

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and/or Science or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum one year in a science or engineering facility with demonstrated experience using test and measurement equipment.
  • Demonstrated experience in the use of standard test and measurement equipment such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, spectrum analyzers, signal generators, etc.
  • Demonstrated experience using standard metrology equipment such as calipers and micrometers
  • Well-developed interpersonal, communication and analytical skills and diplomacy in dealing with others
  • Microelectronics mechanical assembly skills.
  • Demonstrated problem solving and organizational skills

Assets (Nonessential):

  • Experience operating LabVIEW based laboratory test stations
  • Skilled in operation of metrology devices to assess mechanical prototypes and production
