Equine Ambulatory Veterinary Assistant
Inglemere Equine Veterinary Services – Loretto, ON
Mobile | Full-Time | In Person
Are you passionate about horses, detail-oriented, and comfortable working hard in a fast-paced, mobile environment? Inglemere Equine Veterinary Services is seeking a full-time Equine Veterinary Assistant to join our ambulatory practice.
This role is ideal for a highly capable horse person who is physically strong, precision-minded, and enjoys being an essential part of a fast-moving, high-standard practice. We value professionalism, compassion, and a collaborative approach to care. This is a hands-on role that combines horse handling, technical veterinary support, administrative coordination, and real-time problem-solving in an ambulatory environment.
You will work alongside the veterinarian, supporting advanced equine medical care for primarily young, fit performance horses as well as some pleasure and geriatric horses. Our ambulatory practice blends traditional medicine with sports medicine, diagnostics, acupuncture, and regenerative therapies.
Your average day begins at our office in Loretto, Ontario, where you will prepare the equipment, medications, and supplies needed for the day's appointments. From there, we travel to multiple farms to perform examinations, diagnostics, and treatments, while documenting in medical records and tracking materials used throughout the day. At the end of the day, you will return to the office to restock the truck, prepare diagnostic samples for laboratory submission, and organize medications and supplies for the following day.
Please note that this is NOT a summer student position.
Role Overview
This role is approximately:
- 60% horse handling and on-farm/field work
- 20% administrative work (records, coordination, inventory, communication in the office and while travelling between appointments)
- 20% organizing, cleaning, restocking, and ordering
While horse handling is the most visible part of the job, the administrative and organizational workload carries a significant mental demand and requires accuracy, consistency, and ownership.
Horse Handling – Non-Negotiable
Horse handling is the single most important component of this role.
You must be:
- Confident and capable handling young, fit, athletic horses
- Calm and decisive in unpredictable situations
- Physically capable of jogging horses, scrubbing joints and crouching for extended periods, lifting and carrying equipment (50+ lbs), and managing difficult equine behaviour safely
Your primary responsibility is keeping the horses safe, then yourself and the veterinarian.
Skills Required
- Exceptional, calm, and confident horse handling and restraint skills (non-negotiable)
- Positive, resilient, and energetic temperament; able to work hard, stay engaged, and maintain perspective during long or challenging days. Naturally aspires to have fun while at work.
- Strong situational awareness and commitment to safety for horses, humans, and the veterinary team
- Ability to manage a significant mental workload, shifting priorities, and a fast-paced, unpredictable schedule
- Strong attention to detail and follow-through across multiple systems, tasks, and environments
- Willingness and ability to learn technical, administrative, and medical workflows and apply them accurately over time
- Comfort working with technology, including willingness to learn medical record systems, diagnostic workflows, and inventory tracking
- Clear, professional communication skills and strong self-awareness
- Physical strength and stamina for a demanding ambulatory role, including jogging horses, prolonged scrubbing, crouching, lifting, and carrying equipment (50+ lbs)
- Ability to accept direct feedback and adjust performance without defensiveness
- Clean driving record (non-negotiable)
Much of the administrative work in this role involves real-time documentation while the veterinarian dictates. Prior experience with medical records is not required; however, a willingness to learn, strong attention to detail, and commitment to accuracy are essential.
Preference will be given to candidates who are tech-savvy and comfortable using Microsoft and Google platforms, with a working understanding of laboratory, diagnostic imaging, and medical record software. However, motivated and capable horsepersons with strong equine experience, a passion for equestrian sport, horse welfare, and veterinary care are encouraged to apply.
Growth & Development
For the right person, this role can evolve over time to include:
- Advanced technical and diagnostic skills
- Continuing education in areas of interest
- Increased responsibility and autonomy
- Exposure to the operational and business side of a veterinary practice
What We Offer
- Competitive hourly wage, dependent on experience, reviewed annually
- Up to $1,000/year continuing education support
- Paid membership dues to either OAVT or AAEVT after 6 months
- Employee discounts for care of up to 2 horses after probationary period
- 2 weeks paid vacation (accrued); increases after 3 years
- Monday–Friday schedule, overtime per ESA, flexible Fridays depending on the season
- Mentorship, collaboration, and a supportive team that cares deeply about horses and humans
