Job description
Research Program:
Applicants are invited for a twelve (12) month research intensive fellowship program at Oligomaster designed to offer fellows a hands-on bench scientific experience while developing valuable and lifelong career advancement skills in Oligomaster and McMaster University's highly advanced and innovative research environment.
In addition to contributing both intellectually and experimentally to polymer innovation programs with focus on formulation, polymer processing, and product testing, fellows will receive on-the-job training supplemented with customized learning and development initiatives to advance the understanding of the product and business development lifecycle and personal skill acquisition.
Key Responsibilities:
- Engage meaningfully with hands-on, experiential learning opportunities with an outlook on transferrable competencies
- Leveraging past scientific experience, design, execute and drive key cutting edge R&D initiatives within Oligomaster's programs.
- Prepare data for presentation at lab and departmental meetings and/or conferences.
- Participate in manuscript and patent application writing, as appropriate.
- Develop professional soft skills critical to success within & outside Oligomaster.
- Broaden professional network within the material science industry.
Research Opportunities in Functional Areas:
We are seeking a passionate postdoctoral fellow (lead research scientist) with experience in developing natural polymer formulations. The ideal candidate for this position will have experience working with product development in the area of natural polymers for industrial and food contact coating applications. Experience using one or more of the analytical tools such as HPLC, LC-MS, particle-size analysis, FTIR, NMR, GC-MS, and scale-up reactor skills are beneficial. Successful fellow in this position should be able to establish new formulation/polymer synthesis capabilities and possibly has expertise in coating product development.
Qualifications
- Recently completed a Ph.D. within the last 5 years in materials science & engineering, chemical engineering, chemistry.
- Experience in coating and natural polymer design, is an asset.
- The successful candidate should have a strong interest and demonstrated deep understanding of polymer synthesis, coating work, especially natural polymers.
- The successful candidate is expected to understand the assigned project and work independently, propose experimental hypotheses, design experimental questions and protocols, and plan, coordinate, conduct and report on assigned research projects.
- Excellent communication and writing skills, as well as a team-oriented mindset for collaborative research, are critical.
- Technical proficiency, scientific creativity, independent thoughts, and ability to effectively collaborate with others with multiple scientific disciplines.
