About This Opportunity

The Ulnooweg Education Centre (UEC) is seeking a compassionate, grounded, and youth-centred individual who is committed to supporting Indigenous youth wellness through culturally rooted, trauma-informed, and relationship-based approaches.

Our summer programs are grounded in Etuaptmumk (Two-Eyed Seeing) and Netukulimk, and bring together Elders, Knowledge Keepers, educators, and community leaders to create meaningful learning experiences rooted in culture, curiosity, and connection to land.

As the Wellness Coordinator, you will play a vital role in ensuring high school–aged Indigenous youth feel safe, supported, and empowered throughout their camp experience. You will provide steady, non-clinical wellness support, strengthen emotional resilience, and contribute to creating welcoming, inclusive spaces where youth can thrive.

In keeping with our commitment to Indigenous leadership and community-led programming, preference is given to Indigenous applicants. We warmly welcome Indigenous candidates to self-identify in their application, if they feel comfortable doing so.

Position Details

  • Term: 16 weeks (May 4, 2026 – August 28, 2026)
  • Status: Seasonal / Full-Time
  • Location: Multiple sites across Nova Scotia and New Brunswick
  • Travel: Required (includes overnight camps)

Your Role

Working alongside Camp Leaders, the Camp Program Coordinator, and the Seasonal Program Team, you will support the holistic wellness of youth participating in UEC's land-based and STEAM-focused camps.

You will:

  • Provide individualized, non-clinical support to campers experiencing emotional, mental, cultural, or behavioural challenges, including challenges related to identity, belonging, and connection to land and community
  • Facilitate one-on-one conversations, small-group discussions, and sharing circles
  • Create culturally safe, respectful, and inclusive spaces for youth
  • Respond to camper concerns with compassion, discretion, and professionalism
  • Participate in daily wellness check-ins with camp leadership
  • Support participant well-being through regular check-ins and collaboration
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records in accordance with organizational and legal requirements
  • Collaborate with peers, Knowledge Holders, and leadership to ensure consistent, holistic approach
  • Mentor youth within program settings in self-regulation, leadership, resilience, and personal growth
  • Support daily camp routines as part of the wellness and safety of the team

When camp is not in session, you will also assist with:

  • Program planning, preparation, and seasonal readiness
  • Working collaboratively to co-create and strengthen wellness and mental health awareness training for staff, grounded in Indigenous values, teachings, and community relationships.
  • Supporting appropriate follow-up on wellness-related matters, as needed

What We're Looking For

We welcome applications from candidates who bring empathy, professionalism, and cultural humility to their work, and who are passionate about supporting youth in community-centred environments.

You may be a great fit if you have:

  • A diploma or degree in progress in: Child and Youth Care, Social Work, Psychology, Education, Counselling, Recreation Therapy, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Experience supporting youth in community, school, recreation, or camp settings
  • Knowledge of, or willingness to learn, Mi'kmaq culture, language, and community contexts
  • An understanding of trauma-informed practice and positive youth development
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills

We also value experience in:

  • Overnight or outdoor camp settings
  • Mentorship, counselling, or behavioural support roles
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) or trauma-informed care training
  • Mental Health First Aid certification
  • Current Emergency First Aid & CPR
  • Mi'kmaq language and cultural knowledge

Conditions of Employment

  • Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check and Child Abuse Registry Check
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Current Emergency First Aid & CPR 
  • Mental Health First Aid

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to walk and stand for extended periods on uneven terrain
  • Ability to participate in moderately active outdoor programming
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25–30 lbs
  • Stamina to remain attentive and responsive during long days and overnight schedules

Working Conditions

  • Work takes place in outdoor, seasonal camp environments
  • Exposure to varying weather, insects, wildlife, and uneven terrain
  • Long and irregular hours during camp sessions, including evenings and overnights
  • On-call availability during overnight camp sessions, as required
  • Travel within Nova Scotia and New Brunswick
  • Emotionally engaged work supporting youth through growth and challenge
