DutiesThe project will assess the effects on soil and water quality of amending soils with various forms of nutrients recovered from human waste streams including: compost from municipal yard waste, beef cattle manure, and compost from municipal food waste, and struvite, a recovered magnesium ammonium phosphate precipitate from wastewater that can be used as a source of nutrients for crop production. The impact of increasing the phosphorus (P) content in each compost by amending with struvite will also be examined. This will require the collection and processing of water, plant, and soil samples in the field and lab to determine the effect of struvite application to soil on P content in snowmelt, crop yield, P uptake, and soil P chemistry.
