Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care is a 315-bed academic and teaching hospital that provides specialized mental health, addiction and geriatric care. Located on the shores of Georgian Bay, we serve some of the most complex and disadvantaged individuals in Ontario and are the sole provider of high-secure forensic mental health services in the province.

The Director, Strategic Communications and Public Affairs, is currently seeking a Government Relations Lead with a blend of responsibilities that include public affairs activities as well as writing to support the department and its corporate partners. The Government Relations Lead is responsible for monitoring the health policy landscape, analyzing opportunities, and developing strategies, tactics, and tools to influence and advance Waypoint's priorities. This role leverages policy insight, communications expertise, and advocacy to shape and share Waypoint's story with all levels of government, stakeholders, internal audiences, and potential donors. The successful applicant will use their communications skills, including with the written word, to craft compelling content to advance the brand, advocate and engage. The position is integral to both the Strategic Communications and Fund Development teams.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Monitor federal, provincial, and municipal legislative activity, policy announcements, and political developments relevant to Waypoint's operations.
  • Conduct research to identify emerging issues, risks, and opportunities impacting the organization.
  • Analyze policy proposals and prepare summaries, briefing notes, and recommendations for senior leadership
  • Translate complex information into clear, accessible language for diverse audiences, including government officials, stakeholders, donors, and the public.
  • Ensure all written materials align with Waypoint's messaging, tone, and branding standards.
  • Develop and adapt content for engagement campaigns, newsletters, and donor communications.
  • Contribute to the development of government relations strategies, work plans, and tactics in collaboration with internal teams.
  • Compile and maintain evidence, proof points, and case studies to support advocacy positions.
  • Plan and deliver advocacy initiatives and campaigns aligned with organizational priorities.
  • Plan and coordinate meetings, events, and activities related to government relations and profile-building.
  • Support initiatives to increase Waypoint's visibility through outreach and engagement strategies.
  • Compliance & Other Duties
  • Perform all work in compliance with hospital policies, procedures, and relevant legislation (Occupational Health & Safety Act, Fire Code, WHMIS, etc.).

REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, or a related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in communications, government relations, or related field
  • Strong understanding of public affairs and advocacy practices, including government structures and processes at all levels.
  • Knowledge of communications and marketing strategy development and implementation.
  • Advanced writing skills for diverse audiences (speeches, briefing notes, digital content).
  • Good understanding of content strategy is an asset.
  • Strong research and analytical skills to synthesize complex information into key messages.
  • Excellent organizational and event coordination skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and adapt to changing circumstances.
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship management skills for internal and external collaboration.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, exercising sound judgment and discretion.
  • Preference for proficiency in French/English language skills.
  • Membership in IABC, CPRS, CCHL or PAAC a plus.
