About Us

The Ministry of Corrections, Policing and Public Safety's Legislative District Security Unit (LDSU) is an armed and uniformed operational entity created to provide security to the 'Legislative District', pursuant to the Legislative Assembly Amendment Act, 2021. As such, we have an opportunity for permanent full-time officer position to work in this unit protecting and ensuring security needs are met for the Legislative District.

The Opportunity

The Legislative District Security Officer will join a team of seven armed officers responsible for the security of the Legislative District. Under your supervisor's direction you will maintain a high level of tact, diplomacy, and confidentiality working with your team and others to ensure the safety of all who work and visit the Legislative building and area are safe and secure. Your exceptional interpersonal, analytical, and problem-solving skills and non-judgmental demeanor will assist in providing information, conducting thorough interviews, investigations, and inspections, that will assist when working through and analyzing complex situations, and scenarios.

As the Legislative District Security Officer, your primary responsibilities will be:

  • Implementing and enforcing security policy and procedures;
  • Conducting and reviewing security threats/risk assessments, and determining appropriate security provisions adhering to appropriate standards;
  • Completing security investigations of sensitive issues that may include (Criminal Code offences, and security of Elected Officials, Executive Council, Members of the Legislative Assembly, and staff);
  • Liaising with provincial, federal, and international protocol officers, providing security provisions for diplomatic and VIP visits to the Legislature;
  • Coordinating and establishing security protocol requirements with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Canadian Security Intelligence Services, Canada Border Services Agency, Sergeant-at-Arms, Community Safety Officers, Central Services, Municipal Police Services, and the Provincial Protective Services branch of the ministry;
  • Ensuring demonstrating groups (planned or unplanned) are informed and comply with security requirements, legislation, and established policies;
  • Ensuring firearms, and security intervention equipment, is maintained and adhere to policy safety standards;
  • Completing research, investigations and developing reports and other documentation
  • Work with other contractual security staff/resources providing supplementary security functions.

Ideal Candidate

Practical experience in public policing and/or law enforcement services preferred. You will be experienced working in a high performing protective and secure unit functioning teams focused on security and protection. As a contributing member of the team, you will be accountable, approachable, and flexible in all your daily encounters.

Typically, this position requires a candidate having a background in law enforcement or as a police officer, knowledge and experience required to be successful in this position would be obtained and supplemented by a bachelor's degree or college diploma in police science, criminal justice, public administration, or a related field, and will also have the knowledge and competence in the following:

  • Law enforcement, legislation (Canada Criminal Code), and policy regarding public safety, and current law enforcement management theory and administrative standards;
  • National and international policing issues, philosophies, practices, and trends;
  • Knowledge of governance structures, and legal and court processes and practices;
  • Communication (written and verbal) and experience in media and community relations dealings, and completing reports and other documentation;
  • Surveillance, protective services, use of force, and a variety of intervention equipment such as (sidearms, defensive batons, conducted energy weapons and OC spray); and
  • Conduct risk assessments, criminal investigations, intelligence gathering, and practices negotiating and conflict management.

Candidates who have years of progressively responsible law enforcement and policing experience, (senior police-executive role is seen as an asset). The nature of the position requires the incumbent to be flexible (on call), work some evenings and weekends, and perform inspections under a variety of conditions. A Class 5 Driver's License is required. Officers are to be appointed as a Special Constable under the Police Act 1990, and are required to pass RCMP security screening, be trained and authorized to carry a sidearm and operate other intervention equipment such as conducted energy weapons, collapsible baton, and OC spray.

Conditions of employment must be met to commence in this position:

  • Valid First Aid/CPR certificate;
  • A current and valid class 5 driver's license;
  • Ability to obtain Special Constable status in Saskatchewan;
  • Ability and Authorization to carry a firearm. (*Required to successfully complete the Provincial Firearms Qualification Standard, use of force training, OC Spray, and expandable baton training);
  • Physical testing (demonstrating overall health and fitness);
  • Undergo psychological testing, criminal record check, background checks, qualify for a heightened level of security clearance;
  • Work varied shifts with extended hours; and
  • Successfully complete position-specific training including Use of Force and Risk Management.
