Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Communications Coordinator is responsible for developing and implementing a communications strategy that raises awareness of poverty and homelessness in Western Canada and supports The Mustard Seed's mission through effective storytelling, media relations, community relationship building, and day-to-day community management. The Coordinator also supports the social media team by assisting with content creation and scheduling, monitoring online community interactions and ensuring consistent communication across all platforms.

Employment Type: Full-time, Fixed-term for 1-year

Schedule: 40 hours per week, Monday–Friday, between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Wage: $51,000.00 Annually

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Clearly communicate the mission, vision, core values, and story of The Mustard Seed with both internal (staff, volunteers, community) and external (donors, media, businesses, agencies, churches) audiences
  • Prepare timely communications materials and promotional items in support of programming, fundraising, and special events for Kamloops
  • Provide support for social media and storytelling for The Mustard Seed by creating content (photos, videos, and copy when needed) - Kamloops
  • Maintain media database and public contacts for disseminating information
  • Assist with key messaging for media releases, public service announcements, media kits, etc. - Kamloops
  • Assist in the production of organizational videos as required for promotional purposes
  • Assist with writing stories and research for newsletters and campaigns
  • Coordinating and posting content for SeedLinks (quarterly digital newsletter) and SeedShare (Staff Intranet)
  • Support events with communication and logistical needs
  • Participate as a team in communication strategy and planning
  • Assist with communications projects as needed

Social Media & Community Engagement

  • Monitoring organizational channels on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, X, YouTube, TikTok and other emerging platforms.
  • Field and respond to all incoming messages on TMS active channels, working collaboratively with team members and other departments to ensure information shared is accurate and internal stakeholders are informed.
  • Respond to comments on all platforms, representing The Mustard Seed brand and voice accurately.
  • Assist Social Media coordinators with content gathering, creation and scheduling as required.
  • Attend weekly Communications team meeting and other relevant meetings related to TMS brand and communications.
  • Other duties, tasks, activities, and responsibilities as deemed appropriate to fulfill the responsibilities of the position, and to support the Social Media team.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • A passion for being part of ending homelessness in Western Canada and a desire to serve those who are experiencing homelessness and extreme poverty
  • Post-secondary education in marketing, communications or a related field
  • Two or more years of experience in communications, public relations, marketing or community engagement with demonstrated ability to support storytelling and public-facing initiatives
  • Self-motivated, proactive, energetic, and goal-oriented with superior interpersonal skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Word and PowerPoint
  • Demonstrated understanding of community and social media platforms (e.g. Meta, LinkedIn, YouTube, TikTok) and experience managing content through scheduling tools such as Brandwatch or Hootsuite
  • Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite is considered an asset
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines
  • Previous experience working in a not-for-profit organization is highly desirable
  • Valid driver's license, access to a reliable vehicle, and clean driver's abstract

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Hybrid work model; with some weekend and evening work may be required
  • Office environment—more mental than physical—extensive periods of sedentary work
  • Fast-paced and demanding work environment
