Focusing on environmental health, safety, wellness, security and risk management, the EHSW department works to create a safe and healthy environment for the entire SAIT community. They do this by proactively managing risks and promoting well-being through a thoughtful and comprehensive approach.
The Opportunity
Reporting to the Security Operations Coordinator and working closely with the Campus Security team leads, patrol guards and dispatchers, SAIT Community Peace Officers will be expected to perform a broad range of security and public safety related duties to safeguard staff, students and the public who access the SAIT campus as well as protect its buildings, grounds and assets.
A key focus of the SAIT Community Peace Officers will be to employ and foster a community policing approach in all of their dealings with the community, including conducting highly visible, customer service focused physical patrols of the site and continuous and positive engagement with SAIT community members.
Although part of a team of Community Peace Officers, this position may be required to work on their own during portions of their shift. Community Peace Officers will have to deal with complex issues requiring professional judgement and appropriate discretion and must possess the aptitude and skill set necessary to make time sensitive and appropriate critical decisions. They work within the operational guidelines dictated by SAIT and the office of Security & Emergency Services while experiencing a very dynamic work environment with high stress factors, year-round weather conditions and moderate physical demands. The volume of work will be unpredictable, and tasks will range from routine to complex.
Note that this position requires shift work, including holidays.
The Role- Perform proactive foot and vehicle patrols of the SAIT campus, including on-campus residences and off-site campuses, to enhance safety/security and develop positive contacts in a uniquely diverse community
- Continually interacting within SAIT community; advise and support students, staff and guests on security and safety matters.
- Ensure consistent implementation of SAIT policies and procedures
- Support Health and Safety best practices and initiatives. Ensure that staff are knowledgeable of risk management practices.
- Respond to incidents of emergency, criminal/provincial/SAIT offences, institutional policy and procedure violations, general complaints, calls for service and crime prevention. Examples include medical emergencies, crisis intervention, fire alarms, missing persons, disturbances, intoxicated persons, suspicious persons, trespassing, break and enter, theft, mischief, escorts, emergency notifications, special event security, property control, security surveys, building/room access, etc.
- Exercise discretionary enforcement authority under numerous Provincial statutes and institutional policy
- Assist community members through various supports such as, education, referrals to social services, mental health supports, community assistance and/or discretionary enforcement in response to criminal activity and disorder
- Conduct general complaint investigation; gathers and secures evidence, compiles reports
- Administer/coordinate/contribute to departmental, community oriented and crime prevention programs such as presentations to students, faculty and staff on crime prevention and awareness
- Serve legal documents and liaise with other law enforcement and first responder agencies,
- Investigate and prepare preliminary investigation reports, may assist department and faculties with non-academic investigations
- Collaborate with and provides support to the Campus Security team
- Provide testimony in a court of law and Institutional hearings.
- Process found and evidentiary property
- Provide dispatch, administrative and support duties as assigned
- The successful candidate must have achieved a designation in either Community Peace Officer Level 1 or Alberta Peace Officer Level 1 or be eligible to receive an exemption from the Solicitor General. Please note that Correctional Peace Officer designations are not considered.
- Previous Police or Peace Officer work experience is an asset.
- Ability to work a variety of shifts including days, overnight, weekends, and statutory holidays
- Possess a current Standard First Aid Certification and Level C CPR with AED
- Valid driver's license (Alberta Class 5 or equivalent, non-GDL)
- Experience with Microsoft Suite
Short-listed candidates must submit/undergo:
- Current, valid Community Peace Officer Level 1 or APO Level 1 appointment or valid notice of exemption from the Solicitor General.
- A recent clear driver's abstract demonstrating a good driving record with no more than four demerits; Out of Province drivers must provide a three-year abstract from the licensing authority
- An enhanced security clearance may be requested.
- Offer of employment will be conditional on the successful completion of an approved Physical Abilities Requirement Assessment (PARE), proof of completion of the Community Peace Officer Induction Program (CPOIP), and all other requirements as set by the Alberta Solicitor General's Office
