Shepherd Village is currently accepting applications from qualified candidates for the position of Nurse Manager of Clinical Education. Reporting to the Director of Care, the Nurse Manager of Clinical Education is responsible for leading the planning, delivery, and evaluation of educational and clinical development programs for Nursing staff. This leadership role focuses on fostering excellence in clinical practice through mentorship, coaching, and evidence-based learning strategies. The Nurse Manager Clinical Education Lead supports the advancement of clinical competencies, drives quality improvement, and ensures compliance with regulatory standards while promoting a culture of continuous professional development and resident-centered care.

What You Will Work On

Reporting to the Director of Care, the successful applicant will be responsible for leading clinical education initiatives within the nursing department, including new hire orientation, mentorship programs, and the coordination of student placements in collaboration with our partner educational institutions and the Centre for Learning, Research, and Innovation in Long-Term Care (CLRI) – PREP LTC.

How You'll Create Impact

  • Education and Training:
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate clinical education programs for nursing and healthcare staff, focusing on skills, knowledge, and best practices in long-term care.
  • Conduct orientation and ongoing training for new hires, ensuring they understand clinical procedures, protocols, and safety standards.
  • Provide in-services, workshops, and continuing education opportunities on topics such as infection control, wound care, dementia care, pain management, and palliative care.
  • Coordinate and deliver training sessions or arrange for external trainers as needed. Assist with developing and updating training materials and resources.
  • Competency Assessment:
  • Evaluate the clinical skills and competencies of nursing and care staff through direct observation, testing, and feedback.
  • Assist in the development of competency checklists and performance evaluations.
  • Track and report individual and team progress, identifying areas where additional training may be needed.
  • Clinical Support and Mentorship:
  • Serve as a resource for clinical staff, answering questions, providing guidance, and offering support on clinical challenges and resident care issues.
  • Mentor and coach staff in applying clinical best practices and resident-centred care.
  • Assist with complex cases and provide suggestions for improved care delivery.
  • Compliance and Regulatory Standards:
  • Stay current on Fixing long-term care regulations, accreditation standards, and best practices in long-term care.
  • Ensure educational and clinical practices align with regulatory requirements (e.g., Fixing Long-Term Care Act, CNO, RNAO).
  • Monitor staff compliance with care standards and support audit preparation
  • Collaboration and Communication:
  • Partner with nursing leadership, management, and interdisciplinary teams to identify educational needs and develop care protocols and procedures based on current clinical trends and evidence..
  • Support open communication and foster a positive learning culture by encouraging open communication, feedback, and collaboration among staff members..
  • Act as a liaison with external partners (e.g., community colleges) for educational initiatives
  • Student Placements:
  • Coordinate student placement programs, working closely with People and Culture and academic institutions.
  • Ensure documentation, orientation, and training modules are completed; assign students to appropriate preceptors.
  • Monitor progress, provide feedback, and promote opportunities for employment post-placement.
  • Maintain accurate records and assist in program evaluation and improvement.
  • Promote and recruit team members into preceptor roles and support them throughout the placement.
  • New Hire Onboarding:
  • Collaborate with Department Managers and Human Resource Department to coordinate onboarding, including orientation sessions, training completion, and transition into departmental roles.
  • Act as a point of contact for new hires, monitor their progress, and ensure a seamless integration into the team.
  • Support the recruitment process through participation in job fairs and strategy development.
  • Quality Improvement:
  • Use data and outcome indicators to inform educational strategies and support clinical quality initiatives.
  • Engage staff in quality improvement processes, coaching them to meet or exceed care delivery standards.
  • Documentation and Reporting:
  • Ensure accurate records of all education sessions, staff training, and competency evaluations.
  • Provide regular updates to leadership regarding staff development, training effectiveness, and emerging educational needs.

What Are Your Skills and Experience

  • MUST be qualified to work in Canada legally for the employer.
  • A Registered Nurse (RN) with a current certificate of competence with the College of Nurses of Ontario. BScN preferred.
  • Post-RN education in Gerontology or three years experience in Long-Term Care.
  • Post-RN education in Management or three years of relevant managerial experience.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and clinical software systems.
  • Certificate in Workplace Learning and Adult Education or the equivalent experience providing workplace and adult training and development
  • Strong clinical judgment and critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Exceptional leadership, conflict resolution, and facilitation skills.
  • Second language proficiency is an asset.
  • Demonstrates maturity, sound mental and physical health, empathy, patience, and tact
