Topic-Oriented Sessions (TOS) Facilitators will facilitate two-hour small group Topic-Oriented Sessions (TOS) that occur throughout the six-to-seven-week modules in Year 2 of the program. These sessions are driven by a specific topic, which can be a disease process. Using a learning activities-based format, students will work collaboratively to develop a strategy to acquire the necessary knowledge.

TOSs are aimed at learning in the integrated medical sciences aspect of the curriculum. Specifically, the emphasis is on how the basic sciences apply to disease processes and form the foundations for clinical assessment and treatment interventions.

Reporting

Stipendiary TOS Facilitators report to the Associate Dean, Undergraduate Medical Education. Collegial and collaborative supervision will be by the Division Head, Medical Sciences and Human Sciences.

Full-time faculty are assigned TOS facilitation through, and report to, the Division Head, Medical Sciences and Human Sciences.

Responsibilities
  • Complete an online orientation/training for the TOS prior to the module.
  • Attend and participate in the TOS Faculty orientation session at the beginning of the module.
  • Complete the required pre-reading for each TOS that is assigned to the students.
  • Become familiar with the TOS format, requirements, goals, and activities
  • Be prepared to facilitate student learning based on the provided facilitator guides, ensuring that discussions and activities follow the approved TOS structure and intent.
  • Write assessment questions to be used in TOS assessment along with an answer key rubric if needed. Facilitators need to be engaged in the writing and grading of the assessment questions. It is expected that each facilitator will write and submit a minimum of four exam questions to the Theme 4 Module Content Coordinator.

Education
  • Must hold a faculty appointment at NOSM University
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Strong Communication and Interpersonal Skills – ability to facilitate discussions effectively, encourage participation, and create a respectful learning environment.
  • Expertise in Topic-Oriented and Active Learning Methods – proficiency in facilitating TOS, case-based discussions, and student-centred teaching approaches.
  • Student Engagement and Motivation – demonstrated ability to encourage active participation and collaborative learning.
  • Assessment and Feedback Competence – experience in formative and summative assessments, with the ability to provide constructive, timely feedback.
  • Comprehension of Subject Matter– strong foundation in medical sciences with the ability to comprehend required pre-readings.
  • Group Dynamics and Facilitation Skills – proficiency in managing discussions, balancing participation, and addressing group dynamics effectively.
  • Promotion of Critical Thinking and Self-Directed Learning – ability to guide students in problem-solving and independent inquiry.
  • Adaptability and Flexibility – capacity to modify facilitation strategies based on student needs and evolving educational practices.
  • Professionalism and Role Modeling – commitment to ethical standards, respect for diverse perspectives, and fostering a culture of professionalism.
  • Educational Background and Ongoing Development – advanced training in medical education or adult learning is preferred.
Language
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English (verbally, written and comprehension)
  • French/Indigenous language skills would be considered an asset
Remuneration
  • Faculty Handbook instructional hourly rate
Time Commitment
  • Approximately four (4.0) hours per week
