The Service Worker III, Maintenance position supports the daily operations of campus facilities by performing a wide range of maintenance tasks. This role is essential to ensuring a safe, clean, and functional learning and working environment for students, staff, and faculty. The Service Worker III performs duties in building maintenance, groundskeeping, event setup, minor repairs, and equipment upkeep. The position requires hands-on problem-solving, and the ability to work collaboratively within the Facilities team and across departments.
Key Job Functions:
Maintenance & Repairs
- Install, maintain and repair drywall, cabinets, doors, windows, tables, planters, furniture, tile, and paint as required.
- Fabricate, cut, shape, and alter materials for a variety of projects, including, but not limited to, signs (interior and exterior), whiteboards, desks, doors, fencing, flooring, and cabinetry.
- Report facility damage, safety hazards, and equipment malfunctions promptly to their Manager.
- Assist tradespeople with electrical, plumbing, and mechanical repairs and preventative maintenance.
- Identify and escalate issues requiring specialized trades or further intervention.
- Maintain accurate records of completed work, service calls, hours and materials that were required by utilizing the current work order computerized system and some functions are still paper based.
- Maintain a basic operational awareness of building conditions, including the ability to identify and report structural issues or damages beyond the scope of immediate repair.
- Maintain building infrastructure such as access control (door swipes), reading utility meters, fire and alarm systems, and general control of building utilities (temperature and lighting).
Facilities & Operations Support
- Support event setups, assembling furniture, equipment, and materials as requested.
- Support the Shipping & Receiving team as needed by unloading trucks, delivering mail/packages/skids, booking fleet packages, and courier inquiries.
- Perform snow removal duties using shovels, snow blowers, or equipment such as skid steers, ensuring safe access to walkways, entrances, and parking areas.
- Operate campus equipment such as forklifts, skid steers, and light-duty vehicles as required for maintenance duties.
Health & Safety
- Adhere to all College health and safety protocols, including WHMIS, PPE use, and documented procedures.
- Participate in safety meetings, drills, and required training to support a safety-first workplace culture.
- Assist in the proper handling and disposal of biohazardous or hazardous waste materials in accordance with regulations and college procedures.
- Maintain tools and equipment in safe operating condition.
- Keep current records and updated training certification as needed.
Professionalism & Customer Service
- Maintain a professional appearance and positive attitude in all interactions.
- Communicate clearly with staff, students, and faculty about work status and timelines.
- Provide responsive, courteous service and follow up on requests as needed.
- Minimize disruptions in sensitive areas and maintain confidentiality when required.
- Work cooperatively with team members and escalate issues when necessary.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Facilities Manager.
Education/Experience/Skills/Knowledge Required:
- High school diploma required.
- Valid driver's license (Class 5 minimum) required.
- Minimum two (2) years of relevant maintenance or facilities-related experience.
- WHMIS and valid First Aid certification required.
- Experience operating equipment such as skid steer, forklift, and other light/heavy equipment required.
- Apprenticeship training or trade certification (e.g. carpentry) considered an asset.
- Strong carpentry and painting skills are considered an asset.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- Customer service-oriented with a professional and respectful attitude toward students, faculty, and visitors.
- Strong reasoning, decision-making, and problem-solving abilities.
- Demonstrated time management, organizational skills, high attention to detail and accuracy in all tasks.
- Ability to handle complaints and know when to escalate to your management.
- Computer literacy and ability to adopt new technology and systems.
- Physically fit and able to lift up to 50 lbs, stand for extended periods, and perform manual labor indoors and outdoors in varying conditions.
