Reporting to the Manager Policy, the Policy Advisor, Social (Advisor), is responsible in providing objective analysis, advice, and support to Directors of Policy at all departments on programs, policy, planning and legislative initiatives and ensures that advice to departments is consistent with the government goals, objectives, priorities, and management principles. The Advisor also monitors compliance with Cabinet and the Financial Management Board direction and governing authorities such as legislation, regulations, policies, and government mandate. This position is unique in testing government initiatives for compliance with current government goals and objectives, ensuring that relevant information is put forward to decision makers before a final decision is made, and drafting recommendations to Cabinet and Deputy Minster level committees.
ResponsibilitiesThe Advisor is a key position in reviewing and analyzing policy initiatives which will require a decision by Cabinet. The Advisor requires a complete knowledge of the government's policy and decision-making framework, as the analysis and advice conducted by the incumbent can have a direct impact on all Nunavummiut. This position works on several interrelated but separate projects simultaneously to ensure deadlines and goals are met. This position has a continuing impact on the coordination and relations between the Government of Nunavut's policy and related government bodies.
QualificationsThe knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through a recognized undergraduate degree in public administration, social sciences, business administration, Indigenous Studies, law or a related field, plus three (3) years of experience developing and analyzing public policy, programs, and systems in a large organization or government setting. Fluency in Inuktut is considered an asset. This is a Position of Trust, and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check is required.
The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut's official languages would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land,Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.
