About Us:
The Henry N.R. Jackman Faculty of Law is one of the oldest professional faculties at the University of Toronto. Today, it is one of the world's great law schools. Jackman Law's rich academic programs are complemented by its many legal clinics and public interest programs. Jackman Law is housed in the elegant, state-of-the-art Jackman Law Building, alongside two historic buildings, Flavelle House and Falconer Hall, on the St. George Campus in downtown Toronto.
Description:
Pro Bono Students Canada (PBSC) is a national organization which is hosted by and has its head office at the Jackman Faculty of Law, with Chapters at 22 Canadian law schools. PBSC's mission includes providing free legal support to people and communities facing barriers to justice and providing law students with an opportunity to develop their legal skills.
The Family Justice Centre (FJC) is an initiative of the PBSC's National Office that provides a more accessible pathway to justice for low-income self-represented family law litigants in Ontario by providing unbundled legal services in the form of summary advice and, when appropriate, assistance with court document drafting. Primarily, services are delivered virtually through a suite of technologies managed by the PBSC National Office as well as in person at specific courthouses. PBSC National hires law students who partner with volunteer lawyers to provide legal services to qualifying members of the broader community.
Under the direction of PBSC's National Director, the Supervising Lawyer, (FJC) holds diverse responsibilities within the FJC including, but not limited to, overseeing the intake process, overseeing the development of public legal education resources, answering students' legal questions, developing policies for the program, providing training on substantive and procedural law to the students, managing the program's partnerships and leading continued program development.
The incumbent is required to be a licensed lawyer who has the expertise in family law and maintains professional liability insurance coverage.
As a senior member of PBSC, the incumbent will also provide support to the National Director in the areas of stakeholder relations, strategic planning, fundraising, budgeting, along with other leadership functions.
Minimum Qualifications:
EDUCATION:
Undergraduate degree and law degree (LL.B or J.D. Degree). LL.M or a graduate degree in a related area of study is a strong asset. Ability to practice Law in Ontario. Membership in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario. Training in anti-racism and anti-oppression practices.
EXPERIENCE:
Minimum 5 years of experience practicing family law. Experience with training and/or supervising law students. Significant prior experience working with highly vulnerable communities. Experience working in social justice and/or a public interest setting, and engaging in community outreach activities. Prior supervisory and/or management experience is an asset.
SKILLS:
Demonstrated legal expertise with a focus on family law; superior written and oral communication skills; exceptional interpersonal skills; highly effective problem solving skills; sound reasoning and decision-making skills; effective project management skills; exceptional analytical, organizational and time management skills; and good computer proficiency (i.e., Word, PowerPoint, and email).
OTHER:
Ability to appreciate and balance PBSC's dual mandate of service to members of the broader community and student education; familiarity with clinical legal education pedagogy and practice; ability to work under stress and meet deadlines; ability to manage conflicting priorities and deadlines; ability to handle sensitive and confidential maters with discretion; and demonstrated adaptability and creativity.
