JOB SUMMARY:

The Social Development Coordinator/Outreach Worker will assist with the planning, coordinating, and implementing of programs that assist in guiding and engaging families, children, youth, and community members.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Parenting Support/Workshops – This will include retreats, regalia making, drum making, cedar bark weaving, Traditional Parenting program, cooking and preserving, Traditional foods & medicines, and budgeting. Certificate training and career development will be included for the Social Development Clients and other members identifying the need for assistance.

Preventative Support/Intervention – Providing support to individuals and/or families at risk and to assist in mitigating risk factors in efforts to prevent further escalation. Working with families to assist in the prevention of children going into care or alternatively supporting protocol factors.

Community Wellbeing – This will include retreats that will focus on emotional well-being targeting areas such as self-esteem & self-worth; establishing boundaries; realizing personal values, principles, beliefs & getting in tune with self. During the winter months, we will host retreats to promote healing and growth. We will utilize the Kwakiutl's facilities to host the functions.

Assist with finding qualified respite care providers and support for families, single parents as deemed necessary.

Outreach – Outreach services will be a large part of the position to ensure we are providing services in a Culturally sensitive and inclusive manner that represents Traditional Kwakiutl ways of knowing and doing.

Coordination and Enhancement – The above activities will be coordinated with the Social Development Administrator and Kwakiutl Band Departments to ensure enhancement and filling gaps that are identified. Collaborative efforts to meet the needs of the membership will be essential.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience

  • Completion of a Diploma or Degree in a related field such as Indigenous Studies, Social Work, Mental Health & Addictions, Health, and/or a combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Experience working with individuals, children, youth, families and elders.
  • Professional experience in holistic healing measures and cultural safety.
  • Knowledge of Kwakwaka'wakw language and culture.
  • An outgoing individual who has a desire to promote change and individual growth by providing extensive outreach services.
  • Advanced knowledge and training in anti-oppressive and trauma informed practices.
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to multi-task in a dynamic working environment; self-motivated personality; ability to work independently and as a team player.
  • Flexibility is a must and this position will include some evenings and weekend work
  • Administrative, computer and office skills.
  • Financial management and fiscal reporting ability.
  • Experience in proposal writing, project reviews and evaluations.

Job Skills and Attributes

  • Willingness to increase practical knowledge and understanding of traditional Kwakwaka'wakw and mainstream healing practices relating to emotional, physical, intellectual, and spiritual wellness.
  • Willingness to increase practical and historical knowledge of intergeneration trauma, stress, and cultural repression.
  • Provide outreach services to individual, families, and communities as needed, such as, but not limited to providing information of local community resources or referrals to programs within the Kwakiutl departments.
  • The ability to assist in activities that complement and enhance programs that are already in place with the goal of providing increased holistic, social, and personal wellness activities in a safe environment.

  • Reliable transportation and current valid BC Driver's License and willing to obtain business insurance and liability coverage.

  • Driver's Abstract required.
  • Criminal records check for vulnerable persons required.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

This position is at 35 hours per week. Performance review will be completed after 3 months probationary period. Wages to be determined based on knowledge, skills, and abilities.
