Job Summary
The Operator is a unionized position that reports to the Operator Training Supervisor and On-Road Operator Supervisor. This role is responsible for the safe, reliable, and customer-focused transportation of passengers within the DARTS service area. Operators provide door-to-door service with sensitivity to the needs of seniors and persons with disabilities. Success in this position requires strong customer focus to ensure a positive rider experience, empathy to support the diverse needs of passengers, positive interaction in all communications, and attention to detail in following safety procedures and schedules.
Responsibilities
Passenger Service
- Provide safe, courteous, and reliable door-to-door service for DARTS passengers in compliance with standard operating procedures.
- Aid passengers entering and exiting vehicles, always ensuring comfort and dignity.
- Collect and safeguard passenger fares and maintain accurate records.
- Communicate with empathy and professionalism when responding to passenger needs, concerns, or questions.
Vehicle Operation
- Conduct daily pre-trip inspections and report any mechanical or safety issues.
- Safely operate DARTS fleet vehicles and operate manual or power ramps as required.
- Properly secure mobility devices such as wheelchairs, walkers, and scooters.
- Report schedule deviations, accidents, incidents, or vehicle issues promptly to dispatch.
Compliance & Safety
- Ensure compliance with all company policies, including health and safety regulations.
- Practice defensive driving techniques to ensure passenger and public safety.
- Perform other duties as required.
Job Specifications
Education & Experience
- Ontario Secondary School Diploma (Grade 12) or equivalent required.
- Minimum of 25 years of age.
- Experience working with seniors or the vulnerable sector considered an asset.
- Defensive driving training considered an asset.
- Strong knowledge of Hamilton streets considered an asset.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong customer focus with a commitment to delivering high-quality service.
- Demonstrated empathy in working with diverse populations, including individuals with disabilities.
- Effective communication and positive interaction skills with passengers, colleagues, and supervisors.
- Strong attention to detail to ensure accurate fare collection, trip reporting, and adherence to safety procedures.
- Ability to bend, twist, squat, kneel, and sit for extended periods of time.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs.
- Ability to pass a medical fit test (provided by Wellington Medical Centre, paid by DARTS).
- Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
- Valid Class "B" or "G" Ontario driver's license with a clean Driver's Abstract required.
- Clear Vulnerable Sector Check from Hamilton Police Services (at applicant's expense) required before driving independently.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $20.68-$28.74 per hour
