About Us

The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry's Office of Distributed Education is part of the Education Portfolio of the Dean's Office. It is funded by the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care and is one of Canada's largest distributed medical education programs. It is comprised of an Assistant Dean - Distributed Education, Manager - Distributed Education and Regional Strategy, and 600+ preceptors located in over 60 communities located throughout Southwestern Ontario. Schulich Medicine's Distributed Education office facilitates rural and regional education and training opportunities to undergraduate and postgraduate learners

Responsibilities

The Discovery Healthcare Student Coordinator will provide specialized support in the areas of administrative services, research services, infrastructure services or student services as it relates to Discovery Healthcare Camp programming. The successful candidate can expect to work up to five (5) hours per week for the majority of the contract with the possibility of additional hours assigned as required during active camp. The incumbent will play an integral role in setting up the 2026 Discovery Healthcare Summer Camp in the region including advertising, recruitment and planning.

Work can be split with some in-office time and virtual work.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Assess and provide recommendations to redesign and improve the marketing strategy and process of recruiting medical students as Camp Leaders
  • Collaboration with the DE team, and Schulich Marketing and Communications to develop a customized regional marketing approach for each program and community site targeting the youth participant audience
  • Review the past curriculum developed for delivering oneweek youth engagement day camps (DHC) within communities across Southwestern Ontario with the aim to provide any futureproofing recommendations to ensure curriculum is current
  • Highlight any strategies around engaging different stakeholders to create various program champions for DHC that could be relative to the healthcare needs of the communities participating in the programs
  • Participate in community connections to reintroduce the camps to former presenters
  • Prepare camp supply reports and identify purchases for 2026
  • Carry out a variety of tasks including updating policies, procedures, and instructions provided within the DHC resource handbooks to assist with providing up to date teaching information for the medical student leaders coming on- board to operationalize future programming.

Education:

Must be a student returning to studies in the fall and enrolled full-time in the following Western programs:

  • Medical Doctor or Dentistry program within the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing program within the Arthur Labatt Family School of Nursing
  • Occupation Therapy program or Physical Therapy program within the faculty of Health Sciences

Experience:

  • Previous work experience in a camp setting with preference given to Discovery Healthcare Camp Experience
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize and lead activities

  • Passion for inspiring and mentoring youth with interest in a healthcare career
  • Written and verbal communication skills to express ideas clearly, and adapt communication style to suit the situation and audience
  • Ability to maintain a positive, outgoing attitude with genuine customer service orientation
  • Reliable and dependable with the ability to consistently work assigned schedule
  • Ability to apply critical thinking to evaluate information and make appropriate decisions
  • Ability to apply creativity, innovation and resourcefulness to daily work

  • Computer skills with Microsoft Office, with the ability to learn and use new software programs as required

  • Ability to work in a manner that is compliant with confidentiality requirements as applicable
