We invite civilian and sworn members to apply for the position of Primary Handler and Secondary Handler for a Facility Dog.

Autism Service Dogs Canada has offered to provide our Service with a trained and certified Facility Dog – he is a 2-year old black lab named North. 

This potentially new member of our Service would be under the care of a primary handler and would live at their home when North is not working. During his shift, North can be taken to other sections of the Service to spend time with members. During difficult events or days, he can be brought in to help at any time. 

Some things to consider when applying to become a primary or secondary handler for a Facility Dog:

  • Willingness to participate in on-going training sessions.
  • Current living arrangements – do you have place for the dog to exercise? Is there a secured fully fenced yard or access to a private yard?
  • Will members of your household accept a trained dog as an equal partner in your house – and will they be able to limit their interaction with the dog if required?
  • Do members of your household have allergies?

The Primary Handler is the person who will be responsible for North's work and care.

The Secondary Handler will be responsible for North's work and care when the primary handler is not available.

Note: these positions are voluntary and do not receive additional compensation; however, the Service will cover the expenses for food, equipment (e.g., toys, treats, bedding, etc.) and veterinary care.
