The successful candidate will be required to complete a Criminal Record Check and Driver's Abstract, in accordance with the duties of this position. The successful candidate(s) must provide their own CSA approved safety boots.

This position is a summer contract (May – End of August). Scheduled shifts on weekdays and weekends on a 40-hour work week. The Hourly wage range for this position is $18.20 to $21.41.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Operations Supervisor, the Gardener Summer Student will work in a team setting to plant and maintain a diverse horticultural and landscape management program while operating vehicles and light equipment and hand tools.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Work as part of a team to plant and maintain a diverse horticultural and landscape management program.
  • Coordinate and conduct weekly maintenance, fertilization, and watering schedules for all floral displays.
  • Monitor, inspect, document, and report the growing conditions of plant material and improve the quality of plant material through use of best practices.
  • Maintains plants, shrubs and trees on municipal parkland, trails, BIA streetscapes and designated Town boulevards. Conducts regular inspections of same.
  • Operate vehicles including pickup trucks and watering trucks as well as some light equipment and hand tools.
  • Provide quality and respectful customer service by responding to public inquiries about plant material and horticultural operations and communicating these concerns to the Town Gardener and Operations Supervisor.
  • Suggest and assist in the implementation of operational efficiency improvements specific to horticultural management.
  • Perform other general municipal maintenance duties as assigned in accordance with departmental and corporate objectives.
Qualifications and Requirements
  • Current enrollment in a secondary or post-secondary educational institution.
  • Currently between the ages of 15 – 30.
  • Experience in planting and maintaining horticultural displays is an asset.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Knowledge and/or training in CPR, First Aid and WHMIS are assets.
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment.
  • G or G2 class Driver's License in good standing is required.
Effort/Physical Demands
  • Physical demand requires standing, sitting, lifting, crouching, and walking.
  • Visual attention for health and safety compliance and personal safety while on the job.
Working Conditions
  • Approved CSA safety boots must be purchased by students and worn at all times.
  • Staff shirts will be supplied by the Town and must be worn at all times.
  • Work outdoors in all types of weather conditions.
  • May be required to work occasional weekends, evenings, and special events.
