This position is a summer contract (May – End of August), 35 hours per week, Monday – Friday. The hourly wage range for this position is $22.48 to $

Position Summary

The Planning Student will assist with a wide range of land use planning activities in the community and will be a support within the Planning Department. Duties will include assisting with public inquiries and planning application reviews along with completing public notices and circulations with respect to planning applications and undertaking research initiatives. Computer literacy including GIS, word processing, PDF markup, and spreadsheet creation skills are required.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provides planning information and advice to the general public, agents and developers.
  • Assists processing development applications through the Planning Act/approvals process.
  • Assist in preparing Records of Adoption to Approval Authority.
  • Process and manage development-related applications submitted under the Planning Act
  • review and analyze land development proposals for consistency and conformity with the Town's Official Plan, the County of Simcoe Official Plan, and the Provincial Planning Statement.
  • Author staff reports and memorandums to present planning recommendations to Council and Committees of Council.
  • Prepare planning brochures and other related planning documents as required for various development issues.
  • Conduct research on emerging issues and to support strategic initiatives
  • Perform Zoning By-law reviews as part of the Building Permit process.
  • Provide administrative support for the Planning department.
  • Respond to public inquiries via email, telephone, and in person.
  • Attend Planning and Development department meetings.
  • Assist the Heritage Advisory Committee, as required.
  • Perform other related duties as required
Qualifications and Requirements
  • Current enrollment in a post-secondary education program in land use planning or related field.
  • Possess public relations and interpersonal skills to clarify facts, give information and respond to complaints.
  • Possess written communication skills to complete general correspondence.
  • Possess the ability to deal courteously and effectively with the public, staff, developers, elected officials, etc.
  • Possess operating skills for a variety of office equipment including computer, photocopier, etc.
  • Possess organizational skills to meet multiple deadlines.
  • Knowledge of the Planning Act and Ontario Heritage Act.
  • Knowledge of general research methods.
  • Ability to use ArcView & AutoCAD would be an asset.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • G or G2 class Driver's License in good standing and a reliable vehicle is required.
Effort/Physical Demands
  • Physical demand requires standing, sitting, lifting, crouching, and walking.
  • Visual attention for health and safety compliance and personal safety while on the job.
Working Conditions
  • Work in a standard office environment.
  • Normal work week is 35 hours per week, Monday-Friday.
  • May be required to work occasional evenings.
