Department, Unit or Project Description:
With over 8,000 undergraduate students and 215 faculty members, the Faculty of Science is an integral part of McMaster University. The Office of the Associate Dean, Undergraduate Studies is committed to providing excellent service to prospective and current students, staff and faculty members. We are embarking on an Online Learning Project, where 15+ courses will be delivered online to our undergraduate study body through out all terms. We require staff for test and examination support of these online classes for both in person tests and virtual invigilation.
Invigilators will be expected to set-up examination rooms for in person testing and monitor students during examinations. Invigilators may be expected to invigilate online examinations in Zoom and Avenue to Learn.
Current undergraduate students, graduate students, or full-time employees are NOT eligible for this position.
Job Summary:
Performs the set-up of examination rooms and monitoring of students during examinations according to established procedures.
Accountabilities:
- Distribute, collate and collect examination papers, answer booklets and associated exam materials.
- Monitor students during examinations and escort students as required.
- Respond to inquiries from students, faculty and academic departments based on established guidelines and escalate as required.
- Ensure adherence to examination regulations.
- Administer student sign-ins.
- Complete and submit incident reports as required.
- Act as a Scribe for students according to what the student is dictating.
- Act as a Reader and read examination papers clearly.
- Make pre-scribed announcements throughout the examination period.
- Review identification of and return completed examination materials to authorized faculty or academic personnel.
- Set-up test and examination arrangements including technical support.
- Enter, record and maintain information in spreadsheets and databases.
- Ensure desk and work stations are in clean working condition.
Qualifications:
Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience: Prior customer service experience is preferred.

We are looking for mature, responsible, reliable and committed individuals who are fluent in English (spoken and written) and can communicate effectively (read clearly). Individuals who are able to work in a stressful environment; handle difficult situations; resolve problems; oversee and supervise examinations and to ensure that guidelines and regulations for the integrity and security of the examination papers and procedures are followed during examination sessions. Ability to lift materials in boxes/bags (which may be a variety of sizes and weight) is required, as well as the ability to stand for a longer period of time.
Invigilators are bound by the Academic Regulations as set by McMaster University policies. Must be able to work independently or as part of a team.
Additional Information:
Fall examination period is Saturday, December 6 to Friday, December 19, 2025 .
Winter examination period is Thursday, April 9 to Wednesday, April 22, 2026.
Spring examination period is Monday, June 15 to Friday, June 19,2026.
Summer examination period is Monday, August 10 to Friday, August 14, 2026.
Deferred and midterms shifts may arise through out the terms.
Candidates must be able to work Monday to Saturday anywhere from 8:30am to 10:30pm. Examination Invigilators are normally scheduled from 8:30am to 3:30pm or 3:30pm to 10:30pm. Hours are assigned on the basis of need, determined by the number of examinations scheduled and on the availability of the incumbent. Minimum number of work hours cannot be guaranteed. Must be able to commit to working throughout the entire examination period.
Candidates selected to work as Invigilators are required to attend a mandatory (paid) orientation/training session and complete or have completed the UHS (University Health and Safety) required safety training. For new employees that have not previously completed UHS training at McMaster, four hours will be paid for the successful completion of all required UHS training modules.
