Unclaimed Property Analyst
The Unclaimed Property (UCP) Analyst provides a unique opportunity to lead the operational integrity of Manulife's Unclaimed Property Program and influence how we protect client entitlements across Canada. By managing reconciliation, due diligence requirements, and financial controls, the UCP Analyst directly supports our mission to operate responsibly, transparently, and in full compliance with provincial regulations. The Analyst works closely with diverse business partners, offering expert guidance on UCP requirements and ensuring our processes align with the General Ledger. Through this role, the analyst will gain specialized regulatory knowledge, exposure to senior stakeholders, and hands‑on experience strengthening enterprise‑wide financial controls.
Position Responsibilities:
- Analyze and resolve UCP financial outages by identifying unreconciled items, assessing risk, and influencing corrective actions across regulated and non‑regulated provinces.
- Ensure adherence to UCP and financial controls, including KRAs, corrective action plans, policies, standards, and provincial legislative requirements.
- Develop, maintain, and communicate monthly UCP reporting metrics on inventory control, risks, and progress to senior management.
- Strengthen UCP processes and governance through best‑practice development, quality assurance reviews, and oversight of due diligence guidelines and claim-related escalations.
- Lead meetings, business initiatives, and cross‑functional discussions to provide guidance, propose solutions, and prevent financial or repository discrepancies.
- Collaborate and build strong partnerships with Operations, Audit, Finance, Compliance, Privacy, IT, and other internal collaborators to support strategic and operational alignment.
- Identify and address complex operational, financial, or workflow issues, supporting the design of improved procedures, reporting tools, or technologies; and manage inquiries from analysts and business partners on UCP matters.
Key Challenges:
- Driving awareness and prioritization of Unclaimed Property requirements within business divisions where resources are limited, using strong collaboration and influencing skills to ensure BU representatives understand the importance of these programs.
- Working across multiple diverse functions—including Compliance, Operations, and the Repository Support team—to interpret legislative requirements, dormancy rules, and financial obligations, ensuring they are met accurately and on time.
- Translating standards and policies into clear, actionable guidance that encourages business units to adopt, implement, and adhere to new UCP standards and guidelines.
- Managing elevated responsibility and risk exposure, particularly related to privacy (PIPEDA), requiring strict confidentiality and a consistent focus on protecting client information and maintaining integrity.
Required Qualifications:
- Sound understanding of control and risk principles, or education in accounting/finance or equivalent experience.
- Strong relationship‑building, communication, and influencing skills, with the ability to work effectively across diverse teams, cultures, and geographic areas.
- Highly self‑directed and organized, demonstrating initiative, strong time‑management skills, and the ability to manage multiple tight deadlines under pressure.
- Advanced analytical and financial skill, with a solid understanding of business processes, workflows, and the ability to resolve financial discrepancies and determine escalation needs.
- Proven project management and leadership capabilities, including leading meetings, driving decision‑making, and guiding partners through complex financial or operational issues.
- Strong customer service and problem‑resolution skills related to Unclaimed Property processes and financial inventory controls.
- Robust technical proficiency, including Excel, Word, Salesforce, AWD, Infor, and the Unclaimed Property repository.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in Unclaimed Property, Risk, or Compliance within financial services.
- Proven financial reconciliations/reporting background with strong documentation and variance analysis.
- Advanced Excel skills and an analytical, finance‑first perspective.
