Senior Analyst, Housing Economics and Real Estate
7 days ago
On behalf of our client SHS Inc, Phelps is seeking a Senior Analyst, Housing Economics and Real Estate to join a highly respected Canadian consulting firm specializing in housing policy, research, affordable housing development, and innovation.
Since 1999, SHS Inc has worked with governments, non-profit organizations, and the private sector across Canada to advance affordable housing and community development. The firm has completed more than 300 housing-related strategies, action plans, and studies, contributed to over $1 billion in social purpose real estate, and helped shape how communities envision and deliver inclusive housing solutions.
SHS is driven by a mission to create equitable housing opportunities and foster inclusive communities. The team combines deep housing system knowledge with strategic consulting expertise — helping clients make data-informed, evidence-based decisions that create lasting impact.
The Opportunity
The Senior Analyst, Housing Economics and Real Estate is a pivotal member of SHS's consulting team, responsible for leading and supporting complex analytical projects that influence housing and real estate policy across the country.
This role involves economic modeling, statistical analysis, and strategic advisory work to evaluate housing markets, forecast demographic and financial trends, and support affordable housing development initiatives.
The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker with strong technical and analytical skills, capable of transforming complex data into clear insights and actionable policy recommendations. This is an exciting opportunity for a professional who is passionate about housing, economics, and community impact, and thrives in a collaborative consulting environment.
Key Responsibilities
In this role, you will:
Conduct housing economics and real estate market analysis, including demographic forecasting, financial modeling, and policy impact assessments.
Develop economic and statistical models to support housing needs assessments, financial feasibility studies, and policy recommendations.
Perform environmental scans and literature reviews to identify trends, lessons learned, and emerging issues in housing and real estate.
Prepare forecasts and analyses related to demographic shifts, market conditions, and housing affordability.
Contribute to the design and evaluation of affordable housing strategies, programs, and policies for government and non-profit clients.
Create data visualizations, reports, and presentations that translate complex findings into actionable insights for diverse audiences — including policymakers, community stakeholders, and housing providers.
Support and occasionally lead stakeholder engagement activities, including surveys, interviews, and focus groups.
Participate in project management activities, tracking deliverables, supporting client communication, and ensuring high-quality outcomes.
Provide mentorship and guidance to junior staff and collaborate across multi-disciplinary teams to deliver impactful, evidence-based work.
Qualifications and Experience
Post-secondary education in economics, real estate, statistics, business, public policy, or a related field; graduate-level education preferred.
5+ years of relevant experience in housing economics, real estate analysis, or public policy research (consulting experience is an asset).
Strong research and analytical skills, including the ability to gather, interpret, and model large data sets to produce actionable insights.
Proven ability to develop and refine financial models, including ROI, NPV, and IRR calculations, to assess housing and policy impacts.
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint; familiarity with data visualization or statistical tools is an asset.
Knowledge of housing and real estate economics, public finance, and affordable housing policy and programs.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to craft compelling, evidence-based narratives.
Strong organizational, time management, and prioritization skills.
A collaborative, curious, and solutions-oriented approach aligned with SHS's mission and values.
Why Join SHS Inc
Contribute to meaningful, high-impact projects shaping the future of housing and community development in Canada.
Work in a flexible hybrid model – team members can work from home or at SHS's collaborative workspace in downtown Toronto (77 Bloor St. W.).
Join a dynamic, inclusive, and mission-driven team that values evidence-based thinking and innovative problem-solving.
Benefit from professional growth opportunities, mentorship, and exposure to a wide range of clients and housing challenges.
