At UBC, we believe that attracting and sustaining a diverse workforce is key to the successful pursuit of excellence in research, innovation, and learning for all faculty, staff and students. Our commitment to employment equity helps achieve inclusion and fairness, brings rich diversity to UBC as a workplace, and creates the necessary conditions for a rewarding career.

Job Summary

The Sr Education Consultant designs, leads, and evaluates educational initiatives that build the capacity of students, staff, and faculty to integrate equity and inclusion into their day-to-day roles, relationships, and decision-making across the university. Grounded in adult learning principles and equity-centered pedagogies, the Consultant develops responsive, research- informed programming that addresses the unique learning needs of campus communities.

Their work contributes directly to systemic and cultural change efforts and supports UBC's commitment to inclusive excellence through practical, scalable, and strategically aligned educational interventions.

Organizational Status

The Sr Education Consultant reports to the Vancouver Director of Community & Capacity Building, and works collaboratively with EIO team members across both Vancouver and Okanagan campuses, as well as with UBC units and with student organizations. The incumbent will work in a standard office environment located at UBC Vancouver, with a hybrid arrangement that requires at least 50% time in-person/on-site. Some evening and weekend work may be required.

Work Performed

  • Leads the end-to-end development of impactful educational initiatives that embed equity and inclusion into academic, social, and operational environments on campus. Through this work, the position drives culture change through collaborative program design and delivery and actively contributes to institutional, intellectual and personal transformation for all students, faculty and staff.

  • Partners with colleagues across both campuses including instructional design teams and pedagogical consultants to co-create learning experiences that align with institutional equity goals and reflect the lived realities of diverse UBC communities.

  • Advises campus leaders and departmental teams on tailored educational approaches, drawing on pedagogical expertise to address identified equity and inclusion priorities within their specific unit contexts.

  • Maintains and curates a large repository of educational tools and learning materials.

  • Facilitates learning opportunities such as workshops, webinars, and e-learning modules that address evolving community needs and support inclusive practices. Designs appropriately tailored educational interventions, collaborating with other subject matter experts as needed.

  • Engages with faculty, staff, and students to collaboratively design responsive and context-sensitive learning experiences that address both shared and distinct equity challenges across the university.

  • Continuously researches emerging trends in equity-focused adult education to refine learning strategies and ensure alignment with best practices in higher education, incorporating relevant scholarship and community feedback into program evolution.

  • Facilitates meaningful collaborations and engagement with and between other equity and inclusion leads in units and faculties across campuses and with the broader external community, where appropriate, to nurture and sustain effective partnerships among educational communities of practice.

  • Participates and represents UBC in professional organizations that intersect with equity and inclusion educational mandates on a local, provincial and/or national scale.

  • Oversees budget planning and resource allocation for educational programming, ensuring fiscal responsibility and alignment with strategic priorities.

  • Selects, mentors, and supervises student employees who co-develop and evaluate educational content, offering guidance on facilitation, design principles, and reflective learning.

  • Identifies funding opportunities and develops proposals that sustain and expand educational program offerings.

  • Communicates with tact and discretion on matters of a highly sensitive nature.

  • Prepares reports, publications and other written work as required.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

The incumbent acts collaboratively and within broad guidelines. The incumbent must exercise initiative and sound judgment in making decisions and planning and executing services and programs. Must demonstrate tact, sensitivity and confidentiality in dealing with community members and partners.

The position will also lead in the effective planning, development, implementation and support of equity and inclusion educational programming. Failure to perform effectively would cause significant loss of support for and credibility from program participants, internal and external collaborators, senior administration and community groups. Error in judgment determining resources and techniques needed could affect the quality and success of the projects and credibility of programs that have both strategic and operational impact.

Supervision Received

The Senior Educational Consultant operates with a high degree of autonomy under the general direction of the Director, Community & Capacity Building (Vancouver campus). The role requires independent judgment, initiative, and discretion in representing the Equity & Inclusion Office across a range of contexts.
