The Representative for Children and Youth's Office (RCYO) is an independent office of the Legislative Assembly. The RCYO works to ensure that legislation, policies, procedures, programs, and services put in place by the Government of Nunavut provide ethical, equitable, and consistent outcomes that meet the needs and support the rights of young Nunavummiut, and the families, who rely on them. The RCYO fulfils a range of responsibilities under the Representative for Children and Youth Act that hold government accountable, including individual advocacy, systemic advocacy, and reviews of critical injuries and deaths, as well as providing public awareness, outreach, and education functions.

Reporting to the Director of Child and Youth Advocacy Services, this position works independently and within a team environment to investigate/review systemic issues affecting children and youth and critical injuries and deaths. These issues are often identified through analysis of community complaints/referrals, individual and group advocacy cases, critical injury and death reports, or can be raised by the Representative for Children and Youth on his/her own initiative. The position plays a key role in the generation of office reports that support recommendations for systemic, social, and public policy change. The position ensures that the review/investigative services of the office are conducted in a timely and fair manner and in accordance with the Representative for Children and Youth Act, Inuit societal values, and the office's policies and procedures.

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through a recognized university degree in the social sciences, or a related field. Three years of relevant work experience (must include research, analysis, and writing), and experience leading complex and sensitive reviews/investigations. This a Highly Sensitive Position and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check, along with a clear Vulnerable Sector Check is required.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut's official languages would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.

Acceptable combinations of education and experience may be considered. Applicants who possess equivalent education and/or experience that meets the requirements outlined above are encouraged to apply.
