Events East Group is now inviting applications for the position of Pastry Chef (Term Position) with our Culinary Team at Halifax Convention Centre.

General Summary

Reporting to the Executive Chef, the Pastry Chef leads and oversees all aspects of the Pastry Department at the Halifax Convention Centre. This role provides hands-on leadership in hiring, training, coaching, and developing the team while ensuring strong succession planning and effective day-to-day operations. The Pastry Chef is responsible for high-quality production, inventory management, and ordering, maintaining a safe, efficient, and collaborative work environment that reflects the highest standards of culinary excellence and hospitality.

Flexibility is essential, as scheduling is determined by event activity and operational requirements



What you'll do
Responsibilities

Operations:

  • Develop and implement standardized recipes and menu offerings that reflect current food trends and client needs.
  • Lead and support daily food production activities specific to the Pastry Department, providing hands-on guidance to ensure safety, quality, preparation, and presentation standards are consistently met.
  • Champion food sustainability initiatives by driving waste-reduction practices and ensuring the strategic, efficient use of ingredients and resources across the department.

  • Provide leadership and oversight for food purchasing, inventory management, storage, and the execution of daily work orders, ensuring accuracy, optimal availability, and the highest standards of quality in all food service operations.

Administration:

  • Schedule staff and manage timekeeping processes using appropriate software's and tools to ensure adequate coverage and accurate payroll.
  • Provide proactive oversight of team attendance and conduct, ensuring timely documentation and escalation of issues such as tardiness, absenteeism, and policy violations in alignment with organizational standards and corrective action process.
  • Oversee labour and menu budgeting by planning menus with cost efficiency in mind, monitoring expenditures, and ensuring all culinary operations align with approved financial targets.

  • Provide leadership in ordering, inventory control, and work order management by placing accurate orders, maintaining appropriate stock levels, and ensuring all menu planning and production align with client contract requirements as outlined in operational work orders. This includes ensuring ingredient availability and resource planning to fully meet contractual obligations.

Leadership:

  • Set clear expectations and effectively communicate organizational policies and operational standards to all team members, providing ongoing oversight to ensure consistent compliance and uphold departmental accountability.

  • Coach team members in real time and collaborate with the Sous Chef on performance or conduct issues requiring formal intervention.

  • Lead a culture of continuous learning and championing professional growth initiatives across the department.

  • Lead the performance evaluation process by providing timely, constructive, and strategic feedback that supports employee development and departmental excellence.

  • Assist with talent acquisition efforts by participating in hiring activities and contributing to the development of a strong candidate pipeline that supports long-term operational needs.



What you'll need
Qualifications

Pre-Requisites:

  • Clean safety record and satisfactory attendance record.
  • Successfully meets performance standards of previous role.
  • The ideal candidate must be able to complete all physical requirements of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation.

Education and Experience:

  • Red Seal certification in Bakery through a recognized interprovincial agency or international equivalence.
    • WHMIS, Basic Food Safety, and Standard First Aid certifications are considered an asset.
  • 8+ years' experience in high-volume pastry/bakery production.
    • Competencies in fine dining, vienoisserie baking, sugar work, and chocolate production is considered an asset.
    • Experience preparing international pastry is considered an asset.
  • 4+ years' experience in a leadership role.
    • Pastry/baking leadership experience is considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to use the Microsoft suite of products effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in written and spoken English.
