SCBA and Gas Detection Technician

WestCorp Solutions is seeking a skilled SCBA and Gas Detection Technician to support ongoing maintenance and regulatory compliance activities for our client located in Fort McMurray, Alberta. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining, servicing, and tracking critical breathing air and gas detection equipment across multiple operating sites, ensuring equipment integrity and readiness in accordance with site standards and regulatory requirements.
Location: Fort McMurray, Alberta
Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8-hour days
Contract Length: TBD
Travel: Daily bussing provided to and from the client's site
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain and service approximately 550 NIOSH/NFPA SCBA and RSBA packs and all associated breathing air equipment.
- Wash, inspect, disassemble, clean, reassemble, and test regulators and masks to ensure operational readiness.
- Manage the loan-out process of breathing air and gas detection equipment, including tracking and follow-up on overdue items.
- Complete the annual regulatory change-out of all SCBA/RSBA packs used across upgrader operations.
- Track and document daily breathing air compressor usage and facilitate bi-annual air sample analysis.
- Coordinate shipping and return of cylinders for hydro testing; maintain accurate tracking sheets.
- Maintain parts and consumables inventory to support timely servicing of breathing air equipment.
- Oversee inventory and annual regulatory change-out of fire extinguishers across multiple operating sites.
- Facilitate servicing, recharging, hydro testing, and disposal of fire extinguishers as required.
- Service and maintain leased gas detectors and docking stations across base mine and remote sites.
- Perform minor repairs and calibration of handheld and temporary area gas detection equipment.
- Manage calibration gas and parts inventories; replace calibration gas as needed based on iNet dashboard tracking.
- Facilitate repair and replacement of gas detection units requiring manufacturer service; maintain tracking spreadsheets.
- Conduct monthly area checks to verify equipment maintenance compliance with site procedures.
- Support turnaround and shutdown events by setting up, configuring, and verifying rental gas detection equipment across permit areas.
- Provide occasional support to Emergency Services Fire Training activities (annual burns, NFPA courses, extinguisher training).
Qualifications
- Technical diploma, journeyperson certification, or equivalent experience in instrumentation, industrial safety, or related field.
- Minimum 3–5 years of experience maintaining SCBA, RSBA, or gas detection equipment in an industrial environment.
- Demonstrated knowledge of breathing air systems, calibration gas handling, and SCBA servicing standards (NIOSH/NFPA).
- Experience with iNet or other gas detection management platforms preferred.
- Valid CSO or BSO certification required for site access.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Excellent communication and record-keeping skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with maintenance, operations, and emergency services teams.
