We currently have an opportunity, for a sessional Speech-Language Pathology Instructor, to teach EDAS 1320: Speech and Language Development and Disorders in our Education Assistant certificate program. The course is 45 instructional hours in length and taught twice a year. As such this is a casual position, however there may be additional teaching opportunities for instructors depending on educational background.

Course Description: Educational Assistants support learners with a range of speech, language, and communication differences. Learning how to recognize typical versus atypical speech/language will help build EAs skill in supporting learners and objectives set out by the SLP. Focus will be given to supporting AAC learners with high and low technologies. Boardmaker 7 is introduced; the value of visual supports is reinforced through the creation of materials to support learners. Accessibility features of the Microsoft Office Suite are taught to develop active inclusion and universal design for learning.

Courses are expected to take place primarily in-person in Maple Ridge. Our Education Assistant (EA) program teaches adults interested in becoming EAs in K-12 classrooms who assist students with unique learning needs.

We are looking for a candidate with knowledge of:

  • Typical communication (speech and language) development in children
  • Strategies and techniques to assist children in developing speech and language skills
  • Disorders and delays of speech & language
  • Indigenous cultural considerations in speech and language development
  • Social communications features including joint attention, play, social skills and conversation development.
  • Technology associated with augmentative communication

As an instructor, you are passionate about teaching, have superior communication, interpersonal and organizational skills, have a great attitude, can engage and maintain adult students' attention, have the ability to teach at all learning levels, and strive to facilitate students' success.

The preferred candidate will possess a bachelors or masters degree with minimum three years' experience teaching and/or presenting online and in-person. Consideration will be given to those with significant professional experience in the field.
