Job Summary

Strategy & Decision Support (SDS) is responsible for providing the UBC Executive, Faculty Leadership and Business Units Leads with the strategic insight and capabilities to enable UBC to identify and realize the major opportunities and to tackle the major challenges that will shape the University's current and future success.

Collaborating with UBC partners to realize the University's vision, SDS provides a suite of in-house advisory services to UBC Faculties and Administration in strategy development and integration, financial health, and operational effectiveness.

SDS concentrates on focused pieces of work to lead or advise on strategic planning, answer strategic questions, identify solutions to complex problems, provide advice on how to confront complex challenges and provide the supporting analysis and research referenced for decision making purposes within the University's budget. All of the assignments undertaken by SDS have a significant impact for UBC and are aligned with the University Executive's overall direction.

The Consultant, Strategy & Decision Support, has the opportunity to support all SDS service offerings including business strategy development, strategic planning, financial health and operational effectiveness referenced for decision making purposes within the University's multi-billion dollar budget. Specifically, the Consultant supports on strategic plan facilitation, synthesis of key strategic insights and formulation of strategic recommendations, building of complex mathematical and financial modelling including detailed financial reports, supporting the development of short and long-range business plans for strategic projects and initiatives, including business analysis and research as required, and assisting with business process review.

Organizational Status
Reports to the Manager, Strategy & Decision Support. Provides project support to the SDS team including Senior Consultants, Managers and Associate Director, and Director. Regularly interacts with other managers and directors throughout the University on a project basis, led by SDS Director, Associate Director, Managers, or Senior Consultants. Works in a hybrid remote work office environment with frequent deadlines on multiple projects that may require flexibility in work hours.

Work Performed

  • Responsible for providing significant support on complex projects across all SDS service offerings (strategy, financial health and operational effectiveness) including:
    - Providing significant insights toward the development of project plans including objectives, scope, approach, budget, schedule, performance measures, interdependencies, etc. in order to accomplish project objectives.
    - Responsibility for the implementation of significant aspects of the project plan within the agreed upon scope, timeline and budget.
    - Engagement in the formulation of strategic insights and advisory and decision support to meet project objectives

  • Leading or co-facilitating some client-facing and external facing meetings including interviews, focus group discussions, facilitated sessions and engagement meetings.

  • Developing project reports and presentations as required.

  • Conducting multisource research and contributing to the project discussions to develop and propose innovative solutions.

  • Testing quality of data and reconciling data across sources.

  • Distilling and synthesizing research data, discussions and ideas into key findings and insights and translating these findings into clear, compelling and incisive recommendations and solutions

  • Developing scenarios and sensitivity studies.

  • Contribute to the sizing of risk and identifying mitigation strategies.

  • Contribute to the building of complex mathematical and financial models for a broad range of University and department strategic initiatives. The financial modelling will be prepared as required to assess the financial viability and impact of new and existing strategic initiative projects.

  • Analyzing, preparing and assisting in preparing financial results for current and future years by building assumptions, coordinating input from various sources and compiling results.

  • Contribute to the analysis and generation of comprehensive financial reports and supporting analysis for key concerns of senior management.

  • Performing ad-hoc analytical reporting.

  • Assisting with business process re-engineering by contributing to business process review and analysis to determine needs and identify deficiencies.

  • Extracting data and generating financial reports by using Workday as required.

  • Contributing to the evaluation of  key performance indicators and reporting, and/or making recommendations towards the creation of new key performance indicators, as required.

  • Contributing to the identification of and recommendations to financial policies and procedures and the financial reporting system to provide increased efficiency, effectiveness and useful data for improved decision making.

  • Building and maintaining positive working relationships with relevant stakeholders.

  • Remains current on financial and analytical concepts.

  • Performing other related duties as required with the position.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
As a member of the Strategy & Decision Support team, consequence of error impacts the planning, decision making and financial viability of the departments, the units and the staff. Inaccurate financial modelling, projections and forecasts may lead to mismanagement of resources, which could result in significant financial losses and a negative reputational impact.

Supervision Received
Works under the direction of the Manager, Strategy & Decision Support. Work is reviewed in terms of adherence to University policy, legal and financial obligations.

Supervision Given
This position currently has no direct reports, however may supervise clerical staff and student workers.

Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline.  Completion of the CPA accounting program (CA, CGA or CMA).   Minimum of five years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline preferably in the area of Economics, Commerce, Business Administration, and Engineering

  • Completion of a related Master's degree is an asset. Preference would be given to individuals with an MBA.

  • Analytical and planning experience required. Knowledge and expertise in complex and technical financial concepts.

  • Knowledge of accounting systems, project financing procedures and financial instruments.

  • Advanced knowledge of computer software applications primarily Excel and Microsoft product platform.

  • Effective verbal and written communication, report writing, interpersonal, problem-solving, planning, and organizational skills.

  • Ability to work with a high degree of accuracy, analyze and extract complex data to produce business, statistical and financial reporting.

  • Ability to think strategically, grasp complex business and financial theories, identify key information and issues and suggest viable options as required.

  • Ability to work under pressure and adapt to changing priorities, multi-task, and meet deadlines.

  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.

  • Ability to build relationships at all levels of the department, and the University.
